Jacob de Haan was commissioned to write Choral Music a concert band from Dinxperlo (Netherlands). This band gave the work its premiere in 1997 during the World Music Contest in Kerkrade. Choral Music is based on the chorale Sollt ich meinem Gott nicht singen by the seventeenth century German composer Johann Schop. Contrary to the title Choral Music has nothing in common with a traditional choral arrangement. This contrasting work has a flashing beginning and only much later following on several thematic changes does Jacob de Haan allow the chorale melody to develop into its original form. Following this episode the chorale becomes a toccata developing into a whirlwind finish.

This beautiful long flowing melody comes from Humperdinck’s famous opera Hansel and Gretel (1893). In addition to being a delightful concert work it is also a useful as a tone study for practicing playing in a legato style.

Film music is usually written to match the action of each scene. In Jacob de Haan’s piece La Storia however there are no scenes and no plot yet the composer supplies us with music full of action and suspense. The performers and audience are left to create their own storyline to fit the music. Jacob de Haan has dedicated La Storia to one of the most famous composers of film music - the Italian Ennio Morricone.

The characteristic so typical of Jewish folk music is clearly apparent in this arrangement of the Jewish folk song Shalom Alechem. It is typical in the sense in that in spite of the minor key songs are often cheerful by nature Johan Nijs managed to capture this perfectly in this outstanding arrangement.

Lorsque Piet Swerts eut l’idée de composer une œuvre basée sur la musique klezmer il se soumit en premier lieu à un véritable travail de détective recherchant à la fois les mélodies originales qui seraient les plus aptes à correspondre à une utilisation sous forme de thème ou bien à l’inverse des mélodies susceptibles de créer un contraste approprié. Après une ouverture sombre et mystérieuse il introduit plusieurs mélodies mélancoliques aux couleurs orientales dont l’air Zemer Atik . La mélodie d’un autre chant traditionnel juif est ensuite exposée. En juxtaposant à cette ligne mélodique un contrepoint aux accents des musiques d’Europe de l’Est Piet Swertsréussit à créer un espace sonore orchestral intriguant et créatif. Shirim poursuit son développement sur une succession de mélodies très enlevées et particulièrement colorées : Uri Tzion Sher et Ki Mitziyon mènent l’œuvre vers un finale pétillant et éclatant. Shirim (mot hébreu signifiant « chansons ») est une rhapsodie klezmer qui illustre à la perfection la diversité et la richesse de la musique traditionnelle juive.

Balkanya a suite in three parts composed by Jan Van der Roost was commissioned by the Music School of Gaillon - Aubevoye (France) for the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of its creation. Jan Van der Roost dedicated the piece to the director of the school: Thierry Patel.As in his earlier work Puszta the composer makes no use of existing dances or themes in these three Balkan dances. This high-spirited suite takes its own approach to the folk music of the Balkan countries and is characterized by unique changes in tempo and spirit. Woodwinds brass and percussion all have equal parts making this suite attractive and enjoyable for the entire band.
