As the title suggests this work is a partita: it consists of a number of variations on a chorale melody. The partita has been popular for centuries especially when it comes to organ music. Henk van Belcum who is active in the choir world chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer König as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare the second variation follows based on a canon by Pachelbel. Händel’s Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante. PartitaPiccola is an asset for church services and for concert platforms.

Après Excalibur et Stonehenge Albion est la troisième œuvre majeure pour Brass Band de Jan Van der Roost inspirée par l’Angleterre du Moyen Âge. Bien que l’œuvre ne soit pas construite autour d’une histoire précise ce poème symphonique a toute l’ampleur d’une épopée. L’ouverture de l’œuvre semble dépeindre la conquête d’Albion (premier nom connu de l’Angleterre) transportant l’auditeur à l’époque du roi Arthur et de ses légendaires chevaliers de la Table Ronde. Trois groupes de cornets dispersés au sein de la formation et trois tambours différents reflètent en autant de tonalités et de tempos les périodes de guerre qui plongent l’Angleterredu début du Moyen Âge dans la tourmente. Des accords sombres et majestueux exposés dans le registre grave créent un contraste et donnent au son d’ensemble un caractère trouble et confus. Lorsque les tambours se retrouvent dans un même rythme l’ensemble de la formation interprète pour la première fois à l’unisson le Thème d’Albion.Un allegro energico plein d’agitation apporte soudainement plus d’élan et de dynamisme. Des thèmes virtuoses et guerriers se succèdent donnant au passage un caractère tumultueux. Cette suite de thèmes se conclut également avec le Thème d’Albion soutenu cette fois-ci par une structure harmonique plus complexe. S’ensuit un passage intermédiaire calme et serein permettant à plusieurs solistes d’exploiter et de révéler leurs qualités musicales. Après tout Albion n’a pas connu que des périodes de troubles et de misère. Et le roi Arthur n’est-il pas considéré comme celui qui a apporté paix et stabilité au pays ? Cette lente succession de fragments en solo progresse avec une fluidité presque évidente vers un passage où l’orchestre interprète en chœur les accords majestueux des mesures d’ouverture de l’œuvre. Le Brass Band sonne comme un orgue et le Thème d’Albion vient tout naturellement conclure cette oasis de paix retrouvée. Dans le finale impressionnant plusieurs éléments thématiques

To arrange one of the most beautiful organ fugues by the great classical composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) for brass band is certainly a demanding task. The Baroque is a period of frills and ornaments wether in architecture painting or music. An easy melody passes through a variety of arrangements. From brass quintet and different tutti parts all the sections are in action. Fortified by a drum set and an (optional) electric bass the piece is given a modern touch and becomes more acceptable to the audience. A follow-up to Rondo Romantica this piece was composed in December 1997.

A spectacular dive via an extended chromatic scale immediately submerges us in a charged and somewhat archaic-feeling atmosphere. Trumpets horns and trombones resound in rhythmic patterns buttressed by restless motifs in the percussion. A second theme in the woodwinds begins much calmer but is quickly pushed aside by that same brass offensive. This introduction is the musical expression of the sometimes tumultuous early history of the town of Peer in Belgium. It closes with a D scale played over two octaves and repeated three times symbolizing the church steeples that dominate the townscape. Peer has the credentials of a town and people should know about it.There followsa rhythmic turbulent passage: in the course of history Peer has not been spared the ravages of war arson occupation epidemic and other evils. In contrast a slow pastoral lyrical part expresses the periods of peace and prosperity the town has known as well as the serene geographic setting that still characterizes the place. Various instruments in groups are developed in solo style while the accompaniment displays vast painterly images of sound. Now and then an exotic intonation is heard: a variety of peoples and cultures have left their mark on the town.This episode of tranquility and peacefulness comes to a sudden end when via a surprising almost chaotic transitional passage we are in effect transported back to our own time. A hopeful festive march expresses the confidence in the future that the Royal Concert Band of Peer exudes. This confidence is wholly justified: under the direction of conductor Willy Fransen the 95 members of the concert band have experienced an extended period of good fortune and the 75 musicians of the youth band - and the 45 little musicians of the mini-band - are involved in thriving operations.
