Orígenes (Origins) was commissioned by the European Brass Band Association as a test piece for the challenge section of the 38th European Brass Band Championship in Freiburg Germany 2015. It is a spectacular piece from the pen of CarlosCárdenas who belongs to a new generation of composing talent. The clave a rhythmic pattern which originally comes from African music was the inspiration for this innovative piece all motifs and structures being derived from it. The six parts feature a wide spectrum of percussion instruments reveal animpressive range of new sound combinations and yet are very accessible for the audience.

This composition echoes the thoughts and feelings of a passenger who watches the changing landscapes he observes on this journey: green meadows full of grazing cows and traditional chalets beautiful mountain lakes waterfalls and mountain tops including the scenic Brüning Pass. The thematic cornerstones are DORN after the commissioning band CMV Juliana in Doornspijk Netherlands. It also contains the chorale ‘Schmücke dich du liebe Seele’ used several times in different variations. Adornia contains beautiful melodies broad dynamic passages and has a spectacular conclusion.

Concert March-In Greek mythology Hermes was the messenger of the gods and the god of merchants. The piece starts with a powerful four-measure introduction followed by the solemn 1st theme and the heroic 2nd theme. After the gentle trio section the music increases in tension with several key changes and a dynamic grand finale concludes the piece. This is a spirited concert march with positive musical energy throughout the piece.

for Solo Trombone and Wind Ensemble-Zelkova is a symbolic tree of Sendai City home town of the commissioning wind band “The Tohoku Fukushi University Wind Ensemble”. This composition is dedicated to the band’s conductor Taiken Matsuzakiand and the music reflects his generouspersonality. Satoshi Yagisawa is known for his colourful instrumentation beautiful themes and dynamic style.

Indian Sketches-The Dakota (or Sioux) Indians from the American states of North and South Dakota form the central figures in this composition. The work consists of five movements in which the culture and history of these Indians have been portrayed through musical paintings by making use of an old South Dakota Indian melody.

As the title suggests this work is a partita: it consists of a number of variations on a chorale melody. The partita has been popular for centuries especially when it comes to organ music. Henk van Belcum who is active in the choir world chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer König as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare the second variation follows based on a canon by Pachelbel. Händel’s Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante. PartitaPiccola is an asset for church services and for concert platforms.

‘The Fellowship’ is a musical homage to friendship and camaraderie symbolised in two alternating complementary themes. The themes are based on popular songs from two sister municipalities one lying in Normandy (France) and the other in Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate Germany). Through the merging of their songs in this composition their bond of friendship is sealed for eternity.

Concert Band and combo parts- The Gospel Mass -a mass for mixed choir combo and concert band-is based on the gospel music that has spread throughout the world since its creation in America. The movements of the mass ordinary as we know it have now been composed in various pop styles that have their origin in the gospel music. We hear then not only the classic American gospel style (including the characteristic clapping and swingrhythms) but also freer gospel styles that have developed over the course of time.
