The concerto was first performed by Higashi-Hiroshima Wind Ensemble in Hiroshima Japan in 2010 with guest performer Shinsuke Hashimoto clarinettist with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and was conducted by Atsushi Kageyama. Inspiration for this work came from the fact that both Satoshi Yagisawa and Shinsuke Hashimoto graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae. Clarinet Concerto>/I> is the pinnacle of Satoshi Yagisawa’s “Concerto Series” which also features his Suite Concertante for Piano and WindOrchestra Trumpet Concerto Trombone Concerto Saxophone Concertino and Concertino for Solo Percussion and Wind Orchestra .Yagisawa’s characteristic heartfelt theme in the second movement is especially popular and consequently—entitled Intermezzo —it is often performed independently.Soloist: Grade 4

Each variation can be seen as a stage or a scene in the rich history of the village of Grijpskerk making this work a very exciting and expressive piece of music for a contest or a concert.

The Golden Pass is a rail line in the Swiss Alps that connects Montreux located by Lake Geneva to Lucerne in central Switzerland. This composition echoes the thoughts and feelings of a passenger who watches the changing landscapes he observes on this journey: green meadows full of grazing cows and traditional chalets beautiful mountain lakes waterfalls and mountain tops including the scenic Brüning Pass. Is this real or just a dream? We may never know!

Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica . It takes the form of a three-part concert work in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part Musica Prima is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section Musica Sacra offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. Thefinal part Musica Alpina is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.

Pleasant Hill takes its inspiration from pleasant relaxing moments snatched on top of a sunny hill. It takes the form of a traditional march with the composer leading us over the hill with a bass solo and a melodious trio. The march comes to a close leaving everybody reeling with a fascinating sense of majesty.

Overture for Winds-The city of Caldas da Rainha lies on the west coast of Portugal. The name refers to the thermal baths ( caldas ) as well as to the word for queen ( rainha ). This festive work depicts several beautiful venues of ‘Rainha’ and can beseen as a tribute to the queen Eleanor who founded the settlement at the end of the 15 th Century.

On a Theme in Ancient Style- Chorale Variations comprises six variations on an original theme in Renaissance style. Written as a test piece for the renowned contest ‘Gouden Spiker Festival’ in Friesland (The Netherlands) it is a challenging concert or contest piece presenting attractive and demanding parts for all sections.

Atlantic Overture is a sparkling piece symbolising a journey by ship from Europe to the Americas. The music tells the story of a ship leaving the European coast on a journey that depicts the beauty of the open sea and the sunlight on the horizon. Finally the main theme returns in a brilliant ending that heralds the arrival in America.

All Glory Be to God on High-Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina a mass for choir soprano and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can at the director’s discretion be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts.

As performed by Chris de Burgh-“The idea behind this song is to remind everyone for all those who have forgotten how colourful and exciting Christmas was during their childhood. Christmas is a magical time and after all no matter how old we are we are all still children at heart.” These words were written by Chris de Burgh about his 2009 hit The Bells of Christmas inspired by Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Simon Fahnholz has now made an excellent version of this Christmas hit for concert band.
