From Ancient Times is a major work for brass band inspired largely by the music of the Franco-Flemish School of the Renaissance. Hints of Gregorian chant and middle age dances pay tribute to music from even earlier times. The foundation of this spectacular work rests on truly ‘ancient times’ while the tonal language is of a much more modern nature!

Fanfare for Korea was commissioned by the first Korea International Concert band Festival which took place in 2010 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. In this triumphant fanfare composer Jacob de Haan uses the melody of Arirang the most popular folk song in Korea. The Korea Festival Concert band performed the première at the festival conducted by de Haan himself.

Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten- Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten was composed by Georg Neumark in about 1641 and was subtitled ‘Trostlied’ literally meaning consolation song. Songbooks at the time showed the popularity of this song and it is still well-known today partly due to Johann Sebastian Bach’s use of the melody for one of his own chorals. In Jan de Haan’s arrangement the choral is heard twice once alternating with the original motif from the introduction and a second time without interruption reflecting the composer’s original intention - a song of consolation.

In The Essence of Youth the composer gives an insight into childhood and youth — inspired by his own daughter. The opening of sparking rhythms dynamic contrasts and changes of time signature paint a vivid picture of the unpredictability of children. The first and second movements recount the love — and also tension and the worries — in the adult-child bond through dissonant harmonies but also pretty melodies. The fugue-like ending leads to a final splendid chorale: a picture of proud parents with their child!

Hungarian Dances Nos. 5 & 6-Fascinated by the expressive power and spirit of the gypsy music from Hungary Brahms used mainly traditional melodies in his Hungarian Dances as well as themes from compositions in similar musical styles. No. 5 and No. 6 are the most well-known of his Hungarian Dances and are popular as encores at the New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic.

Diptych- Diptyque is the French word for “diptych ” meaning a hinged two-part image. The first section of this two-part musical painting has an Oriental feel with characteristic pentatonic melody lines and chords. The second section is a cheerful Saltarello dance that brings out the subtleties of the woodwind section. A juxtaposition of Eastern and Western music Diptyque reminds listeners of the power of music in transcending all cultural religious and political boundaries.

This work takes both its name and inspiration from a lighthouse “Sword Cape” that keeps watch near Japan’s naval base. The piece describes how come rain or shine the lighthouse bids a safe journey to departing ships guides them during their travels and eventually welcomes them home again. The music evokes many musical images - grand ships sailing by white-capped waves the deep blue of the ocean and the light of ‘sword cape” as it silently guides ships over the mysterious waters.

Trio Flex is a clever concept that offers you a range of possible options. As well as a demo version played by live instruments the enclosed CD contains two play-along tracks for each piece. One track features the combo only and the other track features the combo plus the second and third parts of the trio. Peter Kleine Schaars has arranged ten well-known numbers for three wind instruments in various styles and genres. Play the melody with the combo on the CD or play the trio version with the other two recorded parts. That will sound great in itself. But you can also form a trio with two co-players and have yourselves accompanied by the combo on the CD. On June 13 2010 the capsule from the Hayabusa satellite successfully returned to earth after enduring a grueling six billion kilometer seven year journey to retrieve samples from the Hayabusa meteor. Composer Satoshi Yagisawa was asked to write a piece to commemorate this momentous occasion. Fanfare - HAYABUSA’s premiere was so successful that the piece was performed a second time in response to the audience’s standing ovation. Out of this World!

Enjoying his travels in Scotland Marco Pütz decided to compose a piece for wind band based on Scottish folk songs. While in the airport at Glasgow shortly before boarding his plane Pütz bought a collection of folk melodies from all over Scotland that had been arranged for flute. At first he harmonized several melodies in his own style then he began to alter the resulting pieces (especially rhythmically). Eventually Pütz added passages here and there and orchestrated the piece for wind band. Pütz’s resulting composition is an educational work that is both enjoyable and appealing to players of all ages although it was written with young bands in mind. From theHighlands is part of a project to increase the repertoire available to youth and school bands both in quantity and quality; an important personal and musical goal for the composer. This is Pütz’s third contribution of this sort to be added to the De Haske catalogue following his successful Arrows of Lightning and Four Sketches for Band .

per oboe solo e banda-Cette pièce lyrique est dédiée au grand Augusto Loppi ex-hautbois solo de l’Orchestre de la Scala de Milan. La première a eu lieu à Monterosi dans la région du Latium en Italie sous la direction de Jacob de Haan avec Augusto Loppi en soliste. L’idiome sonore de cette œuvre n’est pas sans nous rappeler l’écriture des maîtres de l’opéra italien tels que Verdi et Donizetti mais aussi celle du compositeur de musiques de films Ennio Morricone sous la direction duquel Augusto Loppi a interprété le célèbre solo Gabriel’s Oboe extrait de la bande originale du film The Mission .

Much like a film score Peter Kleine Schaars’ composition paints colourful images while telling the story of the Anglo-Saxon monk Lebuïnus. In around 768 AD Lebuïnus founded a mission in the Dutch province of Deventer in an effort to convert the Pagan Saxons. Contrasting themes describe the Ijssel Valley the Saxons and Lebuïnus construction on the church and its subsequent destruction in a clash with the Saxons. The Ijssel-Valley-theme returns one more time in a minor key before each of the themes come together again for one rousing finale. Let battle commence!

Flight into a Hopeful Future-This opening piece by Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa expresses joy gratitude hope and courage. The three sections are performed without interruption. We hear ‘Joy’ in the brilliant introduction ‘Gratitude’ in the chorale-like middle section and ‘Courage and Hope’ in the closing section. A fantastic new addition to the Grade 4 repertoire for Concert Band.

Believe me if all those endearing young charms-Henk Hogestein has created a calm yet uplifting arrangement of the famous Irish song Believe Me if all these Endearing Young Charms . The melody displays the very best of Irish tradition with the words coming from a poem by Thomas Moore about love that goes above and beyond physical beauty. Irish Charms will make a wonderful inspirational interlude at any concert.

Satoshi Yagisawa is well known for his dramatic symphonic band compositions. Even though he has written relatively few marches they are also very popular: March Willing and Able is based on a chorale while March Bou Shu is based on a Japanese folk song. The Memory of Our Native Place is a rather unusual piece for Yagisawa as it actually closely resembles a traditional march. The piece opens with a lively fanfare and is contrasted by the following theme. The trio features a chorale-like melody.

The title Saxophones in the Light describes what the piece does - it puts not one not two but three of your saxophones into the limelight! At the same time Harm Evers also manages to bring out the best in your concert band. This exciting and inventive piece will give all your musicians a chance to shine.

For Cityscapes the composer used the metropolis of New York the largest city of the United States as a source of inspiration. The first movement mirrors the skyline of the ‘Big Apple’. In movement two Central Park is introduced and in the closing movement of this triptych the ever-sparkling Manhattan known for its many skyscrapers and its financial centre Wall Street is the focal point. Not only are the busy city traffic and the chaotic hustle and bustle expressed in the music but also the impressive buildings including the famous Empire State Building. Let the magic of New York shine with this dramatic new item for concert band.
