This work takes both its name and inspiration from a lighthouse “Sword Cape” that keeps watch near Japan’s naval base. The piece describes how come rain or shine the lighthouse bids a safe journey to departing ships guides them during their travels and eventually welcomes them home again. The music evokes many musical images - grand ships sailing by white-capped waves the deep blue of the ocean and the light of ‘sword cape” as it silently guides ships over the mysterious waters.

March of the Women (from The Merry Widow)-This lively attractive march originates from one of the best-known operettas by Franz Lehár Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow) a work that brought the composer enormous success. The operetta features many lovely arias and catchy dances but also subtle passages and wonderful singable tunes. One of those is Ja das Studium der Weiber ist schwer (‘The study of women is difficult’) a tune incorporated in the trio of this march. Lehár obviously had high expectations for it giving it a prominent place within the operetta. He also used it as an effective finale piece.

from Paulus-This excellent arrangement by Robert van Beringen is of the well-known German chorale Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme taken from the oratorio Paulus (St. Paul) by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847). Although accredited to Mendelssohn it is thought the melody was in fact written by the pastor and poet Philipp Nicolai in 1599. Robert van Beringen’s arrangement perfectly captures the biblical story of St. Paul.

For Cityscapes the composer used the metropolis of New York the largest city of the United States as a source of inspiration. The first movement mirrors the skyline of the ‘Big Apple’. In movement two Central Park is introduced and in the closing movement of this triptych the ever-sparkling Manhattan known for its many skyscrapers and its financial centre Wall Street is the focal point. Not only are the busy city traffic and the chaotic hustle and bustle expressed in the music but also the impressive buildings including the famous Empire State Building. Let the magic of New York shine with this dramatic new item for brass band.

The source (sauce!) of inspiration for this work was somewhat unusual. Whilst on tour with a youth brass group Kazys Daugėla ate a Piri-Piri salad that had a wickedly hot sauce. He jokingly told his fellow band members that one day he would write a piece to celebrate this mouth watering experience. The result was this Hot and Spicy piece garnished with a light mambo rhythm!

Ministry of Winds provides some interesting food for thought that Jacob de Haan translates into music. What if there was a Ministry of Winds? It would be in charge of the advancement and dissemination of music throughout the nation as well as strengthening the state through music and providing its citizens with entertainment support comfort and joy. All these aspects are mirrored in Jacob de Haan’s composition culminating in all the joy and happiness the creation of this ministry has provided to the people.
