The inspiration for this piece commissioned by the United States Army Band came from the Gulf and its constant presentation to the world as a media event on television. The composer wanted to capture the colour and events of war as they were played out on the television screen. Composed as a single movement rhapsody the work is framed by the riveting sounds of airborne bombing raids with brass and percussion combining to create a gripping sense of tension.

A fantastic original work in three movements each with it's own character. This piece is sure to be enjoyed by trumpeters of an advanced standard.

Tolkien (1892-1973) The Lord of the Rings has encountered new-found popularity recently with the release of three ?huge-hit? motion pictures. With Bilbo the Hobbit we enter the lands of Middle-earth during the Third Age some decades before The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Fascinated by the works of the masters of film music Maxime Aulio structured this work in their way. When the end credits roll Maxime?s music displays all the basic characters and passages of the novel. From the landscapes of the Shire to Middle-earth the Great Dragons to Gandalf the Wizard Bilbo Baggins tells us his story through light and virtuosoarabesques in the solo part. Bilbo the Hobbit is a wonderful addition to the french horn repertoire and one to be a sure-fire hit with horn players everywhere.

Adagio for Winds is similar in atmosphere to the well-known Canterbury Chorale (also by Jan Van der Roost) in that it has no exaggerated melodrama but rather a melodically wide and expressive approach. The work is full of beautiful lyrical melodies and the warm harmony and the full orchestration give the audience and the band the chance to give their thoughts free reign in a contemplative atmosphere. Adagio is a wonderfully uplifting work suitable for concerts on all occasions and is certainly not one to be missed.

Doesn?t everyone get butterflies in the stomach every now and then? Every person has known moments of being in love. Accordingly in Butterfly Overture a charming love theme has been employed which is introduced by the alto saxophone in the slow middle passage. Additionally the butterfly is a cheerful flutterer that never moves in a straight line but always with an unexpected motion. In the Vivace the flute initially performs the fluttering theme after which it has been instrumented in diverse variations throughout the entire band. A wonderful new addition to the Concert Band repertoire that will be a firm favourite for many years.

Polish Christmas Lights is a collection of three traditional Polish Christmas carols arranged for wind/brass ensemble with flexible instrumentation. These three themes are used throughout the composition with some variation here and there. Add a little sparkle to your Christmas concert with Polish Christmas Lights.

Moonlight Serenade was composed in 1939 by Glenn Miller in his typically American big-band style. It was an immediate success and it even became the signature tune of Glenn Miller. The catchy melody has since been used in various films and television series. It has been performed in many styles from romantic to swinging. The Flanders Recorder Quartet likes to play this work with a low recorder consort: tenor F bass C bass great bass (each instrument then plays an octave lower). This gives the work a slightly “close harmony” feel. Of course the more usual line-up also does the music justice.

The ‘czardas’ Anitschka depicts the love story of a Hungarian and a gipsy girl called Anitschka. She is not easily seduced by her admirer but perseverance prevails in this musical tale: all’s well that ends well.

This flashing piece was commissioned by 'Het muziekverbond van West-Vlaanderen' and is dedicated to the 'Arlequino' youthband.Colourfully and effectfully instrumentated this piece speeds towards its finale without any tempo changes. The chord-blocks which characterized the introduction unite this virtuoso piece by reappearing in the end.

Nel blu dipintu di blu-In 1958 Domenico Modugno (1928-1994) song Nel blu dipinto di blu (or Volare) was the Italian entry at the Eurovision Song Contest. Modugno did not win the contest (he became third) but the song - a true sing-along - turned out to be a worldwide hit. In the course of decades Volare has been translated into various languages and performed by many artists of repute like The Gipsy Kings Dean Martin Louis Armstrong Petula Clark and David Bowie. With this catchy arrangement Lorenzo Bocci has given Volare a wonderfully fitting Concert Band sound.

A Poem by Hermann Hesse (1877-1962)- Stufen (Degrés) est une composition pour Soprano ou Mezzo-soprano et Orchestre d’Harmonie basée sur le poème philosophique éponyme du romancier et poète germano-suisse Hermann Hesse (1877-1962). Le poème évoque les différentes étapes de la vie. La trame musicale de Jacob de Haan porte la marque de la musique post-romantique de Richard Wagner et Richard Strauss. Stufen est placé sous le signe d’un adieu qui fait la part belle à la mélancolie - motif premier qui détermine l’essentiel du climat musical. Le passage instrumental final se développe comme un contrepoids à la tristesse. La musique change de couleur l’atmosphère est sereine et apaisante : de Lamineur nous passons en Do Majeur tonalité pure innocente et lumineuse. L’accord brisé de trois sons (Do Majeur) dans un mouvement ascendant et l’accord lumineux des flûtes et des hautbois apportent une touche aérienne au développement.

En dépit de multiples recherches et calculs scientifiques on ne connaît toujours pas la signification exacte de ce site. Au fil des siècles de nombreuses suppositions et spéculations ont été avancées quant à la fonction de Stonehenge lieu de cérémonies religieuses lieu de rituels et d’adoration mais aucune de ces hypothèses n’a pu être démontrée de façon probante à ce jour. Actuellement on s’accorde à penser que Stonehenge est un calendrier géant. La disposition particulière des blocs permet d’observer le lever du soleil ou le coucher de la lune de prédire lessolstices d’été et d’hiver de déterminer les positions de la lune à travers les diagonales etc. En résumé ce mystérieux monument de pierre permet d’observer les changements de saison. Stonehenge est une mise en musique d’images et d’impressions atmosphériques ; un paysage sonore dont la trame ne suit aucun scénario précis mais dont les images sont réelles.
