Kaitlyn?s Jingles is a set of four variations based upon the Christmas classic Jingle Bells. Each variation represents a different stage of the arranger?s wife?s pregnancy and subsequent birth of their daughter Kaitlyn Chase in January 1999. Frequent visits to the doctor seeing the baby for the first time and finally the anxiety and joy of the birth all are depicted in this delightfully different work which will brighten up any Christmas concert.

In the nineties the Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan recorded a sparkling version of Vicki Sue Robinson’s disco classic Turn the Beat Around . She gave the song a catchy Latin beat and with this new impulse it was a worldwide hit. With the sentence from the song text “Love to hear percussion” in mind Peter Kleine Schaars incorporated a compelling percussion solo in his arrangement. The result is a dynamic piece of music full of pace and passion.

Doesn?t everyone get butterflies in the stomach every now and then? Every person has known moments of being in love. Accordingly in Butterfly Overture a charming love theme has been employed which is introduced by the alto saxophone in the slow middle passage. Additionally the butterfly is a cheerful flutterer that never moves in a straight line but always with an unexpected motion. In the Vivace the flute initially performs the fluttering theme after which it has been instrumented in diverse variations throughout the entire band. A wonderful new addition to the Concert Band repertoire that will be a firm favourite for many years.

Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) Norway’s most famous composer has written a lot of music which is definitely worth playing and listening to! Play Grieg features a selection of well-known and lesser-known works or themes. Since most of these were originally written for instruments other than the one for which they are intended in this volume things such as tempi have been carefully adapted from the original parts or pieces have been shortened to ensure playability.

The Englishman Bishop Reginald Heber (1783?1826) wrote Brightestand Best of the Sons of the Morning for Epiphany. These lyrics werepublished in 1811 in the Christian Observer but were set to music andissued in hymnal books only after Heber?s death by English composerand organist James Proctor Harding. This attractive arrangement byHenk Hogestein will give every Christmas concert a certain elan.

Grand March-This concert march does not begin with flourishing trumpets orloud tutti sounds: Jupiter opens refreshingly with percussioninstruments and the “high woodwinds”. This original introductionis followed by a broad melodic theme and gradually features otherinstrumental groups. Thus section by section the entire band ispresented. A fantastic entrance to the concert for all players!

Claudio S Grafulla was born on the Spanish island of Minorca in 1818 and emigrated to the United States in 1838. Although he was a composer of many original works the one that is still regarded as one of the finest marches ever written is his Washington Grays March. This arrangement strives to recreate the original lost version written for an American Civil War brass band.

This rhapsody reflects the four seasons combined with the natural scenery that characterises the city of Québec and its surrounding region. Autumn is depicted with hunting horns playing in the forest followed by a pastoral melody principally in the woodwinds. Winter in the mountains is poetic and romantic. Spring arrives with a frolicsome and playful theme mirroring the start of new life. Soon everything flowers lushly and the music swells into the full sounding energy of summer bringing the work to a brilliant and dynamic close. A great work for any time of year.

This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991 this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan) this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed!It is a short but varied piece featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction played by the brass instruments a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme played by brass and percussion a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end the fanfare of the introductionreoccurs.Although this Centennial Prelude isn't a really demanding piece it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.
