On average about eight thousand (mostly light) earthquakes occur worldwide each day. Composer Jan de Haan has always been fascinated by this natural phenomenon. Earthquake portrays the beautiful South-American peninsula Isla Iberi which lies directly on a major fault line. The peace and tranquility is shattered by a major tremor and the terrified people flee in fear. In addition to showing the earthquakes destructive power Earthquake also conveys the courage and faith of the industrious people of Isla Iberia as they energetically start the reconstruction of their beloved residential area. Earthquake is dedicated to the memory of all victims of the devastating Asiantsunami which occurred on 26 December 2004.

Sonata da Chiesa for organ and wind orchestra is a work in three movements. The first movement presents three melodic lines which are developed in turn. The second movement introduces a theme by Johann Pachelbel followed by several variations on the theme - a technique favoured by Kees Schoonenbeek. The third movement is a neo-Baroque rondo which introduces thematic elements from the first movement. This is a work rich in colour and sound.

“Yamanobe no Michi” (road at the foot of a mountain) is located east of the Yamato basin. It is the oldest road in Japan and is about 35km (21.5 miles) long. The oldest market and positions used for trading merchandise over the centuries are found along this road. While composing this work the composer visualised the activity along “Yamanobe no Michi” imagining the solemn procession of the aristocracy as well as the chaos that traffic often presents. He also kept in mind the tumultuous history that this road has seen and still represents today.

Bundeshymne-The melody of Bundeslied originates from Mozart’s' Frimaurerkantate (KV62) from 1791. However research has shown evidence that it was probably composed by Johann Holzer a freemason brother of his but there is no definite evidence for this. Following the Second World War this melody was used as the basis for the new Austrian national anthem. Micheal Bilkes has adapted this beautiful stately hymn for concert band. The result is a captivating work for both performers and audience.

For Tuba-This book is a wonderful opportunity to explore the sound of two tubas playing in close harmony. Missa Brevis is a major work for choir and brass band for performance in church or in the concert hall. For this mass there are many performance possibilities depending on the musicians available. In addition to the standard orchestration of choir and band a brass quartet can also play the choral parts. For this it is desirable for the brass quartet to be positioned separately from the rest of the band (on a gallery for example) so that the idea of two choirs is heard. It is also possible to perform the work with brass band and organ. A truly flexible religious masterpiece.

This piece attempts to portray atmospheric pictures through music. The opening section evokes the somewhat misty and hazy early morning atmosphere surrounding the ancient monument. When the band reaches its first dynamic climax it is as if the massive boulders are audible even touchable through the use of minor 3rd chords. The main theme - constructed on the notes CAFBG symbolises the arrangement of the central boulders in the shape of a horseshoe which forms the focal point of this huge collection of stones. Towards the end of the work you will experience a fantastic effect when five soloists play a five part hymn whilst other members of the band create a specialatmosphere by imitating a choir of monks and druids. A fantastic major new concert work for advanced bands.

14 contemporary pieces from around the world-Colours of the World is a varied swinging collection of pieces each of which has its own colour. They include not only tango blues tex mex and Cuban but also house Balkan and folk. To be able to play the pieces well you will need to have some playing experience; sometimes the third position is used and vibrato is also desirable. However these fourteen pieces are relatively easy to play and you will gain much pleasure from them. Great attention has been paid to the accompaniment on the CD - the musicians are specialists in their field so each piece has its own original atmosphere.
