La ville brûle pendant trois jours. Guernica de Jan Hadermann se développe aux sons de la musique basque. La place du marché est pleine de monde. L’atmosphère est douce le printemps s’éveille sur un air de danse joué par des musiciens de rue quand surgit par dessus les montagnes l’escadron de la mort. L’enfer commence à Guernica. L’œuvre se conclut dans une intense expression de supplication pour qu’une telle folie ne se reproduise plus.

This song without words probably does not rank among Wagner?s most well-known works however it exhibits the unmistakable controversy which propelled music forward in the second half of the 19th Century. This arrangement by Peter Knudsvig is sure to enrich the repertoire of your ensemble.

Little Suite for Flexible Band-This short “cool” suite in three movements can be performed with a variety of instruments from a handful of players to a complete concert band. The first movement radiates joy with a powerful 3/4 beat. The second movement is in the style of a pavane which gives a sense of nostalgia and the final movement forms a cheerful and high-spirited closing with a really funky beat. This wonderful suite has been composed especially for youth musicians and they will all gain great pleasure from performing it.Because of the four-part instrumentation School's Cool is suitable for smaller strengths taking into account that it is important to divide parts evenly among the players. Gulliver's Travels-Maxime Aulio composed Les Voyages de Gulliver (Gulliver’s Travels) for the concert band of the Conservatoire National de Région in Toulouse (France) conducted by Jean-Guy Olive. The first performance took place in Toulouse (Auditorium Saint-Pierre des Cuisines) on April 25 2001. The Anglo-Irish author Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) took about six years to complete his epic tale of adventure. The creative storyline clear writing and subtlety of Gulliver’s Travels have been engaging readers for generations. This literary travel between reason and foolishness was Maxime Aulio’s inspiration for this piece. Each of the four movements of this suite is a review of Gulliver’sadventures resembling the effect of a kaleidoscope which juxtaposes small fragments of colour in a linear pattern.

This is a book with cool pieces for those who haven’t been playing very long but still intend to steal the show! The terrific musical accompaniments on the CD will really add to the enjoyment and there is room to make up your own solos in some of the pieces.

Minuit Chrétiens - O Holy Night-The French composer Adolphe Charles Adam's (1803- 1856) carol Cantique de NoÏl (better known in France as Minuit Chrétiens and also widely known as O Holy Night) was initially criticised by church authorities who observed a lack of musical taste and the absence of religious perception. How wrong they were is now clear as the song is popular worldwide and is often performed in churches as well as carol concerts. Roland Kernen has produced this beautiful version of Cantique de Noël for brass band.

for Alto Saxophone and Concert Band-Dance of Uzume is a concertino that is based on a Japanese myth: out of anger toward her brother Susanowa the storm god the sun goddess Amaterasu hides in a cave. The goddess of joy Uzume succeeds in luring the sun goddess out of the cave by dancing wildly. The joy and laughter of the other gods as they watch Uzume arouses Amaterasu’s curiosity and with her appearance the light on earth returns. This fantastic new original work will make a much needed addition to the advanced repertoire for saxophone and concert band. A version for saxophone and piano is also available.

Minuit Chrétiens - O Holy Night-Le compositeur français Adolphe Charles Adam (1803-1856) est initié à la musique par son père Jean-Louis Adam professeur de piano au Conservatoire de Paris. En 1821 il entre au Conservatoire de Paris dans la classe d’orgue et d’harmonium de François Benoist et celle de Boïeldieu pour la composition. Vers les années 1823 il connaît ses premiers succès grâce à ses chansons composées pour des vaudevilles parisiens. Il assied sa notoriété avec ses ballets notamment avec le gracieux Giselle et quelques opéras-comiques. Vers la fin de sa vie il est nommé professeur de composition au Conservatoire de Paris. En 1847 Adolphe Adam compose le Cantique de Noël surle poème Minuit Chrétiens de Placide Cappeau. L’Église émet de vives critiques à l’encontre de la musique jugée trop pompeuse et du texte trop païen. Bien à tort car le noël d’Adam éblouira le monde entier. Il est interprété encore de nos jours même dans les églises. Roland Kernen en a réalisé ce bel arrangement pour Orchestre d’Harmonie.

The Italian libretto based on the play Le mariage de Figaro by Beaumarchais was written by Lorenzo da Ponte—who also made the libretti of Mozart’s opera’s Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte. In the opera Le Nozze di Figaro Count Almaviva tries to seduce the fiancée of Figaro his valet. Eventually through four acts full of complicated intrigue he is outwitted. In his music Mozart—at times in a humorous way—reflects the numerous social and erotic intrigues with both empathy and insight. The brilliant overture is just as vivacious and witty as the opera itself. Mozart delightfullyanticipates the passion and playful love that is to come. The skillful transcription for concert band by Tohru Takahashi certainly does justice to this appealing music.
