The first movement of this work an Allegretto begins with a fanfare-like opening. After a number of other melody lines a reprise of the beginning follows which ends in a cadenza for the soloist. Movement two titled Rituel is characterized by interplay between the soloist and the band within a stately melody. In the final movement the theme of the first movement’s opening returns. In Camel Ride you will experience the magic of a colourful Arabic caravan as it slowly passes by. With this short work for a flexible ten part instrumentation composer Jan de Haan has brilliantly reflected the atmosphere of the parade and carefully capturing the mysticism of the East. Camel Ride will make a great interlude in your concert performances.

Originally Cornfield Rock was written by Jacob de Haan as a version for male choir. It was based on a text by William Shakespeare on a melody of Thomas Morley (It was a lover and his lass). The original melody however was abandoned completely and in its place Jacob de Haan created a new one in rock style. The title refers to the text: That o’re the green corne fields did passe.

The Pet Shop Boys are one of the finest examples of an English electro pop group. Since their formation in the early 1980s they have had 38 top 40 hits in the UK and are still often in the charts today. This highly inventive duo owes their long-term career to the ability to bridge melodic pop and dance music with intelligence and style. Go West was one of their hits from 1993 and this arrangement retains all the splendor of the original. A fantastic pop arrangement which will have all your audience dancing in the aisles.

This piece was commissioned by the Dutch province of Groningen for the celebrations commemorating the liberation festivities in 1987. In the composition the dream of a world without war is symbolized. It is the first composition in a series in which Jacob de Haan combines concert music with pop music in a style which reminds one of film music. Later compositions in which he has reaped much success with the same formula in style are Oregon La Storia and Utopia.

The source of inspiration for the composer was the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl in Russia. The first movement Ostinato expresses desperation helplessness fear and anger. The themes from the first movement are further exposed in the second movement Fantasia which has a spectacular finale. In 1989 this composition was the test-piece for the finals in the fourth section of the National Brassband Championships of Great Britain.

The atmosphere in a busy town park in the spring provided me with the inspiration for this piece. The style of this piece can be described as light music with baroque influences. These baroque influences directly point to the richly ornamental statues which can be found in the park.

Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself after the Greek language meaning Nowhereland and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brasssection remind of Wagner's music.

This composition by Dizzy Stratford symbolises the birth of the new Russia in the time of Mikhail Gorbachev with its new openness in public affairs (glasnost) accompanied by political and economic reform (perestroika). Glasnost is a work offering a modern vision of Russian music. Dizzy Stratford has chosen to combine the national hymn of the Soviet Union with two traditional melodies which with a steady energetic rhythm portray the wind of change and freedom in Russian society.

Les Anges dans nos campagnes-The title of this clever arrangement reveals the Christmas song it is based on. The melody can be traced back to a French folksong from the 18th century which is now known around the world. In France it is called Les anges dans nos campagnes in Germany it is most widely known as Engel auf den Feldern singen and in England it was originally called Angels From the Realms of Glory but it often known as Angels We Have Heard on High . Everyone will rejoice upon hearing the ‘Gloria in excelsis Deo’ refrain!
