Opus 2 no. 1-Edward Elgar (1857-1934) originally composed this work in 1887 as a Pie Jesu when he was an organist in the St George’s Church in Worcester. Years later in 1902 he transformed the Pie Jesu into an Ave Verum for soprano and tenor solo mixed choir and organ. This excellent arrangement was created by Robert van Beringen and skilfully retains the wonderful atmosphere of the original composition.

A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment as this piece will prove!

opus 470-This march opus 470 in Johann Strauss the Younger’s oeuvre was dedicated to the k.u.k. (Royal) Infanterie-Regiment ‘Hoch und Deutschmeister No. 4’ on the occasion of its 200th anniversary. In 1896 this joyful event was celebrated with a grand concert featuring no less than seven military bands with more than 350 musicians performing.

Albastum is a proud stately concert march written in classic A-B-A form. It opens with a festive fanfare in the brass section followed by a lively bright theme symbolising the joy of playing music together at each weekly rehearsal. Following a melodious trio a counter theme develops and the march comes to an exciting close with a reprise of the original theme.

Jan and Jacob de Haan looked at many different sources for their inspiration: three pieces were chosen from Handel's oratorios as well as traditional Christmas carols and two Christmas medleys. opus 117-L’ Annen-Polka op. 117 de Johann Strauss fils fut présentée en 1852 soit dix ans après la première publique de la Beliebte Annen-Polka op. 137 composée par son père. Le fait que tous deux aient écrit une polka portant le même nom n’est pas un hasard. En effet l’ Annenfest (la fête de sainte Anne) était alors la fête d’été la plus populaire de Vienne. Chaque compositeur viennois célèbre ou inconnu a composé une œuvre pour cette occasion. Johann Strauss fils avait 26 ans quand il écrivit cette polka. Il n’était pas en très bons termes avec son père ; une rivalité notoire bouillonnait entre eux. Cependant la création de sa nouvelle œuvre connutun vif succès. Elle fut bissée à plusieurs reprises et louée pour ses motifs très dansants. Dès lors elle triompha sur les scènes du monde entier.

Latin ABC is a suite in three movements inspired by the music of the Caribbean. The first movement is a joyful Curaçaon waltz the second movement a sensual slow salsa: a style that is popular on the island of Bonaire. Finally Latin ABC culminates with a rousing march that brings the listener to sunny Aruba. This work is suitable for Grade 3 players and showcases the percussion section in particular.

The source (sauce!) of inspiration for this work was somewhat unusual. Whilst on tour with a youth brass group Kazys Daugėla ate a Piri-Piri salad that had a wickedly hot sauce. He jokingly told his fellow band members that one day he would write a piece to celebrate this mouth watering experience. The result was this Hot and Spicy piece garnished with a light mambo rhythm!
