based on Homer-s Odyssey-Washed up on the Phaeacian shore after a shipwreck Odysseus is introduced to King Alcinous. As he sits in the palace he tells the Phaeacians of his wanderings since leaving Troy. Odysseus and his men fi rst landed on the island of the Cicones wherethey sacked the city of Ismarus. From there great storms swept them to the land of the hospitable Lotus Eaters. Then they sailed to the land of the Cyclopes. Odysseus and twelve of his men entered the cave of Polyphemus. After the single-eyed giantmade handfuls of his men into meals Odysseus fi nally defeated him. He got him drunk and once he had fallen asleep he and his men stabbed a glowing spike into the Cyclop’s single eye completely blinding him. They escaped by clinging to the belliesof some sheep. Once aboard Odysseus taunted the Cyclop by revealing him his true identity. Enraged Polyphemus hurled rocks at the ship trying to sink it. After leaving the Cyclopes’ island they arrived at the home of Aeolus ruler of the winds.Aeolus off ered Odysseus a bag trapping all the strong winds within except one - the one which would take him straight back to Ithaca. As the ship came within sight of Ithaca the crewmen curious about the bag decided to open it. The winds escapedand stirred up a storm. Odysseus and his crew came to the land of the cannibalistic Laestrygonians who sank all but one of the ships. The survivors went next to Aeaea the island of the witch-goddess Circe. Odysseus sent out a scouting party butCirce turned them into pigs. With the help of an antidote the god Hermes had given him Odysseus managed to overpower the goddess and forced her to change his men back to human form. When it was time for Odysseus to leave Circe told him to sail tothe realm of the dead to speak with the spirit of the seer Tiresias. One day’s sailing took them to the land of the Cimmerians. There he performed sacrifi ces to attract the souls of the dead. Tiresias told him what would happen to him next. He thengot to talk with his mother Anticleia and met the spirits of Agamemnon Achilles Patroclus Antilochus Ajax and others. He then saw the souls of the damned Tityos Tantalus and Sisyphus. Odysseus soon found himself mobbed by souls. He becamefrightened ran back to his ship and sailed away. While back at Aeaea Circe told him about the dangers he would have to face on his way back home. She advised him to avoid hearing the song of the Sirens; but if he really felt he had to hear thenhe should be tied to the mast of the ship which he did. Odysseus then successfully steered his crew past Charybdis (a violent whirlpool) and Scylla (a multiple-headed monster) but Scylla managed to devour six of his men. Finally Odysseus and hissurviving crew approached the island where the Sun god kept sacred cattle. Odysseus wanted to sail past but the crewmen persuaded him to let them rest there. Odysseus passed Circe’s counsel on to his men. Once he had fallen asleep

The famous monolith Ayers Rock (also called Uluru) is the only true attraction in the Northern Territory of Australia. This colossal red rock lies in the middle of a desert plain. At dusk a beautiful spectacle develops as the setting sun envelops the rock in rose-red hues. There are tourists who climb the rock while this is a taboo according to the indigenous religion of the Aboriginals. Besides the climb is very strenuous. A walk around the rock is also an unforgettable experience.During a journey through Australia Henk Hogestein was inspired by this rock; he composed this robust rock number to cherish the memory of it.

The Blues is a well-known style of popular music. The name does not come out of thin air. After all the term ‘blues’ refers to a state of mind: with the sentence ‘I got the blues’ someone means they are in low spirits. The blues originate in the melancholic music that the slaves in the southern United States made to relieve their depressing circumstances to some extent. This new concert work makes use of ‘blue notes’ (the flattened 3rd and 7th notes of the scale) which give this exciting work its blues sound.

This unusual concert work commissioned by the concert band ?Harmonie Concorde? from Sanem in Luxembourg is built on two basic ideas: the evolution of the economic and social context of this Luxembourg city with its strong mining industry and the European concept which is clearly present in this very small but prosperous country with its many European institutes. This is musically expressed in a few quotes from the European hymn Ode to Joy the closing of Beethoven?s Ninth Symphony and from the Te Deum by Charpentier ? widely known as the signature tune for Eurovision broadcasts. A work of true unity.

The melody of the chorale Nun danket alle Gott (Now Thank We All Our God) was originally written in 1636 by the German clergyman and musician Martin Rinckart . Its international fame is due to the fact that in 1725 Johann Sebastian Bach based his cantata Gott der Herr ist Sonn’ und Schild (BWV 79) on this melody. The five-part arrangement by Roland Kernen that lies before you is suitable for a variable brass line-up. After a short introduction the chorale follows first in four-part harmony and later with an added counterpart. A middle section which sounds refreshing and rhythmic because of the time changes and articulation used finally leads to a repeat of thechorale with an agile upper part. This arrangement also contains an organ part ad libitum.

The Albinoni Adagio is based on a manuscript that was discovered among the ruins in the Dresden State Library after the Second World War by Remo Giazotto a Milanese musicologist who was working on Albinoni?s biography at the time. Only the bass line and six bars of melody were there ? they probably belonged to the slow movement of a Trio Sonata. Around 1945 Giazotto reconstructed the now-famous Adagio that has made Albinoni known to a wider public. Ironically enough Albinoni himself would probably hardly recognize the piece.Part 1 Fl Ob Bb Clar S Sax Tpt Part 2 Fl Bb Clar Eb Clar A Sax Tpt Hrn Part 3 Eb Clar T Sax Bsn Hrn Trom Euph Part 4 T Sax Bsn Trom Euph Tuba Part 5 Bass Clar Bari Sax Bsn Euph Tuba Cont Bsn

Festival Overture for Band-This “Grand Overture” was commissioned by the “Nagano Community Band” - Japan- on occasion of its jubilee in 1992 and is dedicated to the band’s conductor Ikuo Inagaki. The work is based upon three main themes each symbolising a certain theme. The first part is characterized by its bright themes played mainly by the brass accompanied by the woodwinds and festive percussion. This part symbolizes the jubilee which is the origin of the composition. This is followed by a bouncing allegro in which each register of the band displays brilliant techniques. Especially the woodwinds come to the fore! This movement depicts the industriousness and enthousiasm shown by the members of the“Nagano Community Band” in the carrying out of their hobby. A third main theme is choral-like in character and is displayed both in the (soft) brass as well as in the warm medium register of the reeds. Here nature’s beaty in and around the city of Nagano is musically celebrated. Following a “chamber-music episode” (featuring the flute oboe clarinet alto-saxophone and horn) the initial allegro re-occurs weaving its way towards a grandiose finale in which the two previous themes are once again apparent. Due to its very colourful scoring and the enormous diversity of musical thoughts and ideas this composition is a fascinating and memorable piece worthy a jubilee overture!

St. Michael-The French composer Louis Bourgeois lived from c.1510 to 1560. Bourgeois was cantor in Geneva and commissioned by John Calvin he composed melodies for metrical (rhyming) versions of the psalms. After completing about a hundred one-part psalms he made some four-part arrangements which were denounced and even resulted in his imprisonment for a day. Later Bourgeois published a number of psalm collections and judging from his book Le droict chemin de musique he was also an excellent educator. The melodies Bourgeois composed are (contrary to Gregorian chants) particularly suitable for community singing. This applies to his hymn tune Saint Michael which is why this melody hasbeen used for various texts written for many occasions. John Blanken made this arrangement for a wedding ceremony: an occasion in which faith and trust play a large - if not the largest - role. Hence the title Hymn of Faith. The arrangement contains four verses of the hymn. After a majestic opening the hymn follows twice the second verse being embellished in the tenor register. After a short interlude verse three follows played by a quartet. The majestic opening is then repeated as a modulation into the fourth verse which concludes the work in a brilliant tutti.
