Facades

Facades was originally written in 1981 to accompany a scene in the cult film 'Koyaanishqatsi'. The scene of New York’s Wall Street on a Sunday morning was eventually cut from the film but the title stillrefers to the facades of buildings on Wall Street. American composer Philip Glass (b. 1937) is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referredto as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.’ Facades later became movement no. 5 of Glassworks Glass’ ground-breaking studioalbum that has come to define his style. It was arranged for Flute and Piano by the composer in 2006.

Philip Glass' Violin Concerto arranged for Soprano Saxophone by Amy Dickson. With a commission from the American Composers Orchestra - Philip's first from an American orchestra - he composed the Violin Concerto . Though the actual writing took some four months (November 1986 - February 1987) Glass says ideas were germinating for a time before writing commenced. The Concerto is dedicated to Dennis Russell Davies and Paul Zukofzky who present the first performance.

Remarkably for a work by Philip Glass the Cello Concerto No 1 or Concerto For Cello And Orchestra conforms broadly to the three-movement form of classic concerti with fast-slow-fast tempi.This concerto is designated as part ofThe Concerto Project recording series started by Glass in the year 2000 currently in four volumes and including eight concerti.American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolificof the modern composers. Paul Barnes presents a suite of seven Piano transcriptions derived from Philip Glass's 1991 opera Orphee . The suite was first performed in April 2001 at the Greenwich House Music School In New York City.

Another Look at Harmony' is a project started in 1975. The approach has been to link directly rhythmic and harmonic structure. In doing so easily audible root movement (chords or 'changes') was chosen in order that the clarityof their relationship could easily be heard. Here as in earlier periods of Western music melodic material is for the most part a function or result of the harmony. However it is clear that some of the priorities of Westernmusic (harmony/melody first then rhythm) have been reversed.

An opera in four acts for ensemble chorus and soloists in full score from minimalist composer Philip Glass. It is Glass's first and longest opera taking approximately five hours to complete with no intermission. Given thenature of the music - the lengthy repetition of small elements very gradual development and change recurring patterns - audience members are free to enter and leave as they wish.

Violinist Maria Bachmann and pianist Jon Klibanoff premiered Philip Glass ' three-movement work Sonata For Violin And Piano on February 28th 2009 at Whitaker Center in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. The piece was commissioned by retired architect Martin Murray to commemorate the 70th birthday of his wife Lucy Miller Murray.

The second in Glass' trilogy about men who changed the world Satyagraha's sub-text is politics. The opera is semi-narrative in form and deals with Mahatma Gandhi's early years in South Africa and his development of non-violentprotest into a political tool. (Satyagraha is a Sanskrit word meaning 'truth force'). Each act is dominated by a single historic figure (non-singing role) overlooking the action from above: the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore inAct 1 the Russian author Leo Tolstoy in Act 2 the American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in Act 3. The music from the conclusion of Act 3 has been beautifully arranged and adapted for Organ solo by MichaelRiseman and Donald Joyce.

The fifth string quartet by the innovative Philip Glass was originally commissioned by David and Evelyne Lennette for the Kronos Quartet and was first performed on February 15 1992.

Solo piano or organ

The Light is a portrait in music of the scientists Albert A. Michelson and Edward W. Morley and their studies of the velocity of light through their memorable experiments which concluded at Case Western Reserve University Cleveland Ohio 1887. This is the full orchestral score of Philip Glass’ work composed in 1987.

Concerto for piano and orchestra- Tirol: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by Philip Glass was premiered at the Klanspuren Festival in Tirol Austria and written with the support of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and the Tirol Tourish Board. Glass studiedsound documents and sheet music of Tyrolese folk-music using this source material directly as the basis for the concerto.
