Another Look at Harmony' is a project started in 1975. The approach has been to link directly rhythmic and harmonic structure. In doing so easily audible root movement (chords or 'changes') was chosen in order that the clarityof their relationship could easily be heard. Here as in earlier periods of Western music melodic material is for the most part a function or result of the harmony. However it is clear that some of the priorities of Westernmusic (harmony/melody first then rhythm) have been reversed.

Philip Glass has produced ten symphonies so far the ones immediately preceding this one inspired by sources as diverse as Allen Ginsberg poetry Aboriginal writings and Native American song. Symphony No 8 however has noreferences to non-musical materials and takes as its subject according to Glass ‘the language of music itself’.The three-movement work does not conform to classical symphonic form with an extended twenty-minute first movement a slow passacaglia for the second movement and a short dense theme joined by a counter theme then ending with an extended cadence to complete the work in the third movement. Symphony No 8 was commissioned by the BrucknerOrchester Linz under the direction of Dennis Russell Davis.American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. (in the Form of a Partita in Seven Movements for Double Bass)- The Not-Doings of an Insomniac Partita for Solo Double Bass with spoken texts was premiered by Robert Black at the International Society of Bassist Convention at the Griffin Concert Hall in Fort Collins Colorado. The Not-Doings of an Insomniac developed as a result of Philip Glass’s frequent travels to unfamiliar cities and different time-zones changes that often brought on bouts of insomnia. While on a trip in Europe in 2015 Glass decided to turn these redundant waking hours into something useful and one of the results is this Partita for Solo Double Bass written for Robert Black of Bang on a Can All-Stars fame. The piece is written in seven movements each with its own title: Not Dreaming; Tasting; Smelling; Hearing; Seeing; Touching and finishing with Not Beginning Not Ending. What raises this set into something atmospheric and theatrical are the poems in between each movement. These are by Glass’s friends or associates and the texts by Lou Reed John Cale Laurie Anderson Yoko Ono David Byrne Leonard Cohen Patti Smith and Arthur Russell are read on the recording of this work by Robert Black.
