American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of‘music with repetitive structures.’ Façades is a work that describes superficial qualities. Philip Glass wrote this piece as part of the soundtrack for the film Koyaanisqatsi but it was not used and so became anindependent work. In fact it became a staple of live performances of the Philip Glass Ensemble during its era (1981). Originally its eerily flowing sonorities were to have accompanied visual scenes of New York’s Wall Streetapocalyptically deserted. The piece was given a new name Glasspiece #2 when it was choreographed for the New York City Ballet. This work is for Flute 1 & 2 OR Saxophone 1 & 2 with string ensemble Violin 1 & 2 Viola andCello. The ’Low’ Symphony composed in the spring of 1992 is based on the record ‘Low’ by David Bowie and Brian Eno first released in 1977. The record consisted of a number of songs and instrumentals and used techniqueswhich were similar to procedures used by composers working in new and experimental music. As such this record was widely appreciated by musicians working both in the field of ‘pop’ music and in experimental music and was alandmark work of that period. Having taken themes from three of the instrumentals on the record and combining them with material of his own Glass has used them as the basis of three movements of this Symphony. Acts 1 2 and 3-The second in Glass' trilogy about men who changed the world Satyagraha's sub-text is politics. The opera is semi-narrative in form and deals with Mahatma Gandhi's early years in South Africa and his development of non-violentprotest into a political tool. (Satyagraha is a Sanskrit word meaning 'truth force'). The first two acts each contain three scenes; the last is one continuous scene. Each act is dominated by a single historic figure (non-singingrole) overlooking the action from above: the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore in Act I the Russian author Leo Tolstoy in act II the American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in Act III

An opera in four acts for ensemble chorus and soloists in full score from minimalist composer Philip Glass. It is Glass's first and longest opera taking approximately five hours to complete with no intermission. Given thenature of the music - the lengthy repetition of small elements very gradual development and change recurring patterns - audience members are free to enter and leave as they wish.

Another Look at Harmony' is a project started in 1975. The approach has been to link directly rhythmic and harmonic structure. In doing so easily audible root movement (chords or 'changes') was chosen in order that the clarityof their relationship could easily be heard. Here as in earlier periods of Western music melodic material is for the most part a function or result of the harmony. However it is clear that some of the priorities of Westernmusic (harmony/melody first then rhythm) have been reversed.

Philip Glass' Violin Concerto arranged for Soprano Saxophone by Amy Dickson. With a commission from the American Composers Orchestra - Philip's first from an American orchestra - he composed the Violin Concerto . Though the actual writing took some four months (November 1986 - February 1987) Glass says ideas were germinating for a time before writing commenced. The Concerto is dedicated to Dennis Russell Davies and Paul Zukofzky who present the first performance.
