Pelle Gudmundsen-HolmgreenNEW GROUND STRING QUARTET NO. 10 - Score Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen's String Quartet No. 10 'New Ground' (2011). Set of parts: WH31462A Programme note: New Ground - No Ground - Green In 1986 I wrote Ground for the Kronos Quartet. I used the principle of the baroque ground and created a series of chords - going up and going down symmetrically. The material formed the basis for the quartet. In my next collaboration with Kronos I wrote the darker Last Ground - at the time supposed to be my last composition of the kind. After some years this seemed a bit pathetic and Idecided to write a new - lighter ground - New Ground . To disappoint my listeners as much as possible I based this piece on a very old and very well-known ground: Pachelbel's Canon. The piece is tonal and that suggested another -atonal - composition - No Ground (based on another string quartet - no. 7 Parted from 1984 first performed by Kronos). I am very fond of the elaborated constructivism of the medieval or early renaissance music so in my view the two new quartets needed to be connected and combined. The two quartets can be performed in combination with the four-part vocal piece Green . The text is from medieval England. The pieces are written for the Kronos Quartet and Theatre of Voices.

Hans Abrahamsen's Concerto For Piano And Orchestra was composed in 1999 by commission for the BIT-20 Ensemble. A complex and multi-layered work opening with highly minimal material and very slowly building to an ecstatic frenzy across the four movements. As the piece progresses Abrahamsen has also included some significant nods towards composers Gyorgy Ligeti (a former teacher of the composer) and Gustav Mahler. The work was premiered at the Ultima Festival in Oslo in 2000 with Anne Marie Abildskov as soloist. I Allegro Volante e nervoso II Adagio innocente e semplice III Tempo de grandegioia IV Fluente ma tranquillo Programme note: ‘The piano concerto starts entirely as I usually start with this filigree in the piano and many simultaneous layers ’ Hans Abrahamsen has explained ‘The beginning is music that could continue almost minimalistically ad infinitum. But it doesn’t. Instead it has a seizure after just thirty seconds. It literally comes to a halt!’ There is no programmatic structure behind the four-movement course of the concerto but a romantically minded listener may be tempted to interpret the development from a quick stalling of the familiar through the introduction (by the lyrical second movement) of something much more ‘innocent and simple’ as it says - something feminine one feels like adding - to the third movement’s flashing firework display of a scherzo which draws the curtain aside for a liberating rush of joy as life after the advent of love. However the undersigned assumes full responsibility for this interpretation. The piano soloist is the undisputed main character in the concerto and plays almost constantly in the first three movements. It is only in the fourth movement that she takes a break and listens. ‘The piano stirs up an anthill’ is Hans Abrahamsen’s own description ‘and it becomes almost operatic! It is as if the music is about to fall right out over the edge of the abyss at the drastic general pause to which the second movement the key movement of the work builds up.’ Hans Abrahamsen's Concerto For Piano And Orchestra was composed in 1999 by commission for the BIT-20 Ensemble.

Work for Orchestra dating from 1981. Per Norgard's Symphony No. 4 (1981) - Indischer Roosengaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee (Indian Rose Garden and Chinese Witch See). Programme Note : This symphony in two movements entitles Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee was inspired by Adolf Wolfli's works - consisting of 20.000 pages of prose poetry and pictures -. An English translation of the title would read: Symphony no. 4 - Indian Rose Garden and Chinese Witch See; after an idea by Adolf Wolfli (1864-1930) and dedicated to him. Wolfli was from 1895 (31 yearsold) until his death in 1930 confined to the mental hospital at Waldau near Bern Switzerland. Although he had no technical knowledge of music he considered himself to be a great composer and his paintings were almost always covered with long festoons of six-lined (!) music staffs. In 1912 Wolfli ordered paints and paper for a planned Musikbuchlein which was to be published in 1920 under the title Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee. (Wolfi uses his characteristic illustrative phonetic spellings with double vowels). The work was never completed and I took it upon myself to realize Wolfli's idea according to his vision but of course within my own preconditions. The double and suggestive title is typical of Wolflis polarized conception of the world which shifts between idyll and catastrophe. This polarization is of almost Chinese nature in that no idyll exists without catastrophic disturbances just as there is a black spot in the white fish and vice versa in the famous Yin/Yang symbol. One might explain this idea with a quote by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun: A prisoner on his tumbrel is wheeled to the scaffold. A nail chafes at his behind; he moves over and feels more

Stratifications was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 1973-75 and was premiered in the summer 1977 by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra at the Young Nordic Music Festival in Reykjavik. Programme note: The stratifications referred to in the title unfold two different levels. There is the stratification of the time dimension produced by the opposition of contrasting parts at the same time the polyphony the presence of several simultaneously sounding layers is of great importance to the music. By garish colours and clear-cut outlines a polyrhythmic simultaneousness of simple melodies is produced with more gestic music and other material which give a peculiar “set piece-like” effect inthe sound picture. The “new simplicity” details are here woven together in a new kind of complex whole. “Stratifications” begins with a series of concretistic masklike “pictures of the music”. It is like seeing lantern slides. But this “fictive” form crackles and the music gets attentive and real. The music is in a night-mare condition where it is not getting anywhere in spite of a great dynamic display. But finally is liberating itself and rising “in triumph”.
