A major edition of 67 songs all in the original keys which covers a variety of voice types. Cyrillic and transliteration are included with each song as are line by line English translations for study. Mussorgsky's richimagination as a composer of song is not well-known. The style is unique the music directly emotional. There are four complete song cycles in this edition. The first Youthful Years is an unconventional songgrouping not written for the same voice type a song cycle that's more a convenience of collecting early work. It would better be viewed as 17 individual songs. The other three cycles are The Nursery(for mezzo-soprano) Sunless (for mezzo-soprano or baritone) and Songs and Dances of Death (mezzo-soprano or soprano). There are also 32 individual songs not in cycles. Mussorgsky wrote substantialrevisions of 11 songs; both the original version and the second version are included for these.Mussorgsky's complete Songs in one large collection. The text is in Russian with both Cyrillic and Western scripts so a reliable guide to Russian pronouciation should be consulted. Titles and other markings are given in Englishalso and literal translations of the text (not for performance) are given at the back of the book by Harlow Robinson.

Score and Parts-Commissioned by the Tak˜cs Quartet Great Performers of Lincoln Center the University of California at Berkeley the University of Colorado and the Ensemble Music Society of Indianapolis. Duration ca. 18 minutes. Sheng's 'String Quartet No.3' was inspired by the memory of a Tibetan folk dance seen in Chinhai the border province between China and Tibet. The dance began with freely rhythmic folk singing and segued into a very rhythmic dancethrough which the singing continued. The structure is loosely based on this memory though the pieces is not an attempt to recreate the scene. The work develops towards the final larghetto section an elegy to friends ofthe composed who sadly passed away shortly before this piece was written.
