Best known for his military marches John Philip Sousa was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era. Sousa 's most famous marches include 'The Liberty Bell' 'The Thunderer' 'The WashingtonPost' 'Semper Fidelis' (Official March of the United States Marine Corps) and 'The Stars and Stripes Forever' (National March of the United States of America). The Northern Pines march was composed in 1931and is scored for Concert Band. Named for the tall and beautiful pine trees that blanket the National Music Camp at Interlochen in northern Michigan Sousa dedicated the march to the students who came to the camp and toDr Joseph Maddy its founder. Sousa was the guest conductor of the assembled student band for the première.

Score and Parts-Commissioned by the Tak˜cs Quartet Great Performers of Lincoln Center the University of California at Berkeley the University of Colorado and the Ensemble Music Society of Indianapolis. Duration ca. 18 minutes. Sheng's 'String Quartet No.3' was inspired by the memory of a Tibetan folk dance seen in Chinhai the border province between China and Tibet. The dance began with freely rhythmic folk singing and segued into a very rhythmic dancethrough which the singing continued. The structure is loosely based on this memory though the pieces is not an attempt to recreate the scene. The work develops towards the final larghetto section an elegy to friends ofthe composed who sadly passed away shortly before this piece was written.

From the Southland is the only work for solo piano by African-American composer Harry T. Burleigh. On Bended Knees was included in the historic 1912 Clef Club concert of black music at Carnegie Hall.
