English Only. Alec Wilder was one of those unusual composers who managed to bridge the gap between the worlds of 'serious' and 'popular' music without losing credibility in either. Set specifically for school and local theatre groups The Lowland Sea is based on memories of the sea - the title is taken from the shanty 'The Golden Vanity' - and it therefore uses shanty tunes of the late 19th century combined with jazz influences. With its story of a couple in love separated by the young man's long sea voyage the opera offers an hour of light entertainment for all audiences. French/English. Translated by Martin. German-born French composer Jacques Offenbach is remembered for his nearly 100 operettas of the 1850s–1870s and his uncompleted opera The Tales Of Hoffmann . Part of the standard opera repertoire Offenbach ’s masterpiece is now also published as a ‘G. Schirmer Opera Score Edition’ for Voices with Piano accompaniment. A monument to E.T.A. Hoffmann this opera fantastique in three acts prologue and epilogue combines three of his grotesque tales moulded into a creative and provocative dramatic entity. The librettist Jules Barbier and Michel Carré chose Hoffmann as the hero of the famous musical fantasy adding the erratic essence ofthe author himself to the stories. Hoffman becomes the narrator and the main protagonist at the same time as he tells the three stories – The Sandman The Lost Reflection in the Mirror and Councillor Krespel – of his three loves. In setting the superb libretto to music Offenbach raced against time and finally lost – dying only four months before the opening with the manuscript in his hand. The opera was an immediate success and saw 101 nights of performance in its opening year in Paris with subsequent premieres all over the world – Geneva Budapest Berlin London New York Mexico Buenos Aires and many more.

Italian/English. Translated by Gutman. In 'Tosca' Puccini explored the dark side of human emotion a marked change from the late-Romantic sentimentality of 'La Boheme'. Also in contrast to 'La Bohème' where the villain was fate and so the stage action was minimal both heros and villains are humans who struggle on stage and the clashes are always between single individuals. It is a story of cheating and doubt - nothing seems honest and direct even love is troubled by jealousy. Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa based the libretto on Victorien Sardou's play La Tosca (1887). This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score and contains an English version by John Gutman.

'The Gondoliers' represents a return to the satirical and ebullient Gilbert and Sullivan of 'The Mikado' after the grim Ruddigore and Yeoman of the Guard. Gilbert sets his story in Venice leaving the cloudy English sky for the sunny Mediterranean world. It is the tale of Casilda who is married at birth to the infant heir to the throne of barteria who is kidnapped soon afterwards. Twenty years later Casilda's family set out to find him. Naturally he turns out to be Casilda's own true love Luiz who she was forced to give up to look for her rightful husband. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score with all the dialogue edited by Byceson Treharne.

Score-This 1975 work was commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts as part of the American bicentennial celebrations. It was premiered by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra conducted by Aldo Ceccato on April 1 1976. Mostly themusic is based on original themes by Gould although there are a few references to actual traditional spirituals highly transformed by the composer.
