from Praises and Prayers-Sheet Music My Master Hath A Garden (1963) is a tender art-song taking its lyrics from an anonymous religious poem in English. The text climaxes by calling on Jesus to “make my heart thy garden”. It is the second work in Virgil Thomson’s song cycle Praises And Prayers arranged for solo Voice and Piano. Virgil Thomson (1896-1989) was a prolific American composer and author who wrote for almost every genre of music with wit and originality. However his contribution to American art-song is probably the most important part of his legacy. His compositions are distinguished by their simple accompaniments and rhythmic emphasis leaving them challenging butrewarding.

In addition to a busy performing career and a full-time teaching post at the University of Leicester the English composer James Walker produced at least 80 published works. His style is often witty and movements display clear thinking and unfussy construction. The first movement is somewhat reminiscent of early 20th-century neoclassical styles. The central slow movement must be legato throughout the almost constant metrical changes whereas the last movement has wit and drama.

Described as 'computer-like' Balada's 'Persistencies' does indeed seem to be a postmodern exploration in sound of what disappers and what remains persists. The original version of 'Persistencies' a concerto for amplified guitar and orchestra is said to be a tribute to Balada's Catalan origins.

Elementalis is a short but very challenging work for Organ dating from 1975. It is effective in its aural brilliance and contrasts. The title is a deliberate distortion of the word 'elemental' for it utilises elemental unsophisticated and primitive ideas. Among these are simple unions and clusters that the organist must play with his five fingers clustered together or with his palm or arm.
