They have contrasting rhythms and textures with flexible metres and a wide but highly effective range of dynamics. They are justifiably one of the most popular works by an American composer from the last century. Kent Kennan (1913-2003) was a composer pianist and pedagogue. He spent most of his career as a professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He wrote music for orchestra chamber ensemble piano and voice before choosing to abandon composition in 1956 at the age of 43 and devoting himself to educational works: his books on Counterpointand Orchestration Technique are regarded as authoritive works in their field.
