Sir Eu was commissioned by the regional music authority of Upper Austria and the brass band SoundINNBrass. The composition was meant to be very virtuoso and was written for the euphonium player Steven Mead who premièred it and has played it regularly worldwide. The title Sir Eu alludes to the master of the euphonium himself and also to the concept of Europe. From jazz through romanticism to folkloristic elements - this work offers everything that the musical heart could wish for!

For someone like Franco Cesarini who was born and raised in a land where every horizon is dominated by the majestic Alps mountains are in one’s heart and soul every moment of life. The true spirit of mountains is described in the words of Alan Hovhaness: “Mountains are symbolic meeting places between the material and the spiritual world.” It is a sentiment with which the composer fully agrees which also helps explain the titles of succeeding episodes of the composition. These episodes alternate moments of reality of matter and with those of the ethereal the spirit. Mountain Majestic is the fascinating final movement from the epic work Poema Alpestre published separately inthis edition for concert band. The town of Guflina in Liechtenstein offers one of the best viewpoints of the magnificent Alps. Underneath the overhanging ledge there is said to have been a cave in the mountain. In it lived a terrible dragon that was on the rampage in the surrounding meadows spreading fear and terror among the population. At the same time there lived a giant man who had the strength of twelve normal men. The farmers implored him to help them in their distress. Let battle begin!

On September 19th 1991 a mummified corpse of a man was found at the Similaun glacier in the Ötztäler Alps. The glacier unveiled an early man after 5 300 years with all his personal belongings. His clothes and weapons were fairly well preserved and today allow us a deeper insight into that period. Austrian nature filmmaker Kurt Mündel reconstructed the life of this man and made a film which based on facts shows how it might have been then. Otto M. Schwarz used this documentary as an opportunity to write a work for symphonic wind band and musically resurrect the “Man in the Ice.”

Romantic Ballad is a short atmospheric piece which is intended to remind us of a beautiful and unforgettable moment. This piece makes us pause for a moment to relive the experience in our mind. Everybody knows such moments of bliss that will always be remembered with longing. The composer dedicates this piece to his daughter Amadea describing the touching moment when he saw her for the first time.

Trio for Horns and Brass Band-This composition highlights the tenor horns. Long understated and unfairly relegated to the accompaniment the tenor horn has gained prominence in the brass band during recent years.Horns Enjoying Themselves is an entertaining piece that will delight performers and audience alike. The first part is inspired by circus with playful themes featuring humorous dissonances. The second part is a slow and calm journey through the mellow and luminous sound colours of the tenor horn. The third and last movement opens with a cadenza played by the soloists (alone). Written in triple time it showcases the technical skills of the soloists.

Opening Showpiece- Entry of the Celts is a delightful light concert opener. As its title implies this work features Celtic-inspired music. All the instruments in the band are given the opportunity to display their most beautiful sound colours: from the bass section to the cornets via the tenor horns euphoniums/baritones and trombones. Each section plays a solo passage accompanied by percussion instruments. The solo for soprano cornet leads to a sparkling and impressive finale. In 1976 the Italian singer Umberto Tozzi released his debut album and then one year later released the single Ti Amo to great critical acclaim. In 1979 Tozzi released his Gloria which was a great success on the continent before in 1982 hitting a global market following an English version by the phenomenal young American vocalist Laura Brannigan.
