Inspired by his life-long interest in chant and choral music Paul Mealor’s De profundis pushes the boundaries of the human voice in a style synonymous with Russian orthodox music. In spring 2012 this piece sparked the 'Bass Hunter' competition - a world-wide talent search for the lowest human voice in existence. The note an ‘E’ (329 Hertz) is six notes below the lowest note ever written for a choral piece (from Rachmanivov’s “Vespers” – a B flat) and a whole tone lower than the Guinness World Record-holder - a sung ‘F sharp’. The piece has since been recorded featuring the winner of the competition Tim Storms (Decca 3709935).Inspired by his life-long interest in chant and choral music Paul Mealor’s De profundis pushes the boundaries of the human voice in a style synonymous with Russian orthodox music. Epithalamium was commissioned by John Sell as a birthday present for his wife Jane and is dedicated to her and to Malcolm Binns. It was written during summer 2006 and derived from the two great chords that swing to and fro during the Coronation Scene in Mussorgsky’s opera Boris Godunov. These provide a series of seven notes (heard in the quick flourishes after the opening chords) which provide the basis for the tunes and the harmonies through most of the work. The idea of bell sounds is carried through not only the chords during the piece but also some of the techniques (e.g. the gradually changing repeated patterns rather like bell-ringing changes encountered towards the end or the quiet and distant uneven tintinnabulation heard at the end of the central slow section). An epithalamium (or epithalamion) is a song or poem in honour of a bride and bridegroom – though technically a wedding piece it seemed an appropriate title for a work honouring an anniversary especially one where bell-sounds provided the original inspiration.

Anthem for Ascensiontide for SSATB and Organ transcribed and edited by Peter Aston. This anthem is No.7 from a set of eight 5-part anthems reflecting on events in the Church Year. The set was completed in 1669. It is clear uniformity of style structure and scoring and from the closely-organised key scheme that these eight anthems were conceived as a cycle.
