Charles Villiers Stanford was an Irish composer music teacher and conductor. Stanford composed a substantial number of concert works including seven symphonies but his best-remembered pieces are his choral works for church performance chiefly composed in the Anglican tradition. Admitted to Queens College Cambridge with an Organ scholarship Stanford had written a substantial number of compositions including vocal music both sacred and secular and orchestral works before getting involved with the university’s Musical Society. While still an undergraduate Stanford was appointed organist of Trinity College Cambridge. Part of the‘Four Intermezzi Op. 189’ Intermezzo On An Irish Air for Organ is based on the melody of the well-known ‘Londonderry Air’. The traditional Irish tune was first collected in the mid 19th century by Jane Ross and is recognised all around the world by the Irish Diaspora. Duration ca. 6:20.

Heathcote Dicken Statham (1889-1973) was a British organist composer and conductor of international renown. His best-known work is the 1944 magnum opus Rhapsody On A Ground for solo Organ. Statham studied at Gonville and Caius College Cambridge and the Royal College of Music in London. He then become organist at Calcutta Cathedral and later Norwich Cathedral where he stayed for almost 40 years. He also conducted the London Symphony Orchestra throughout the Second World War earning a reputation for musicianship of the highest standard.

Christmas Carol Song begins as a slightly grand adaptation of American composer C B Hawley’s Christmas Cradle Song in a dotted 6/8 rhythm to which the Adeste Fideles is added. English Organist and composer Alfred Hollins was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Blind from birth Hollins was fortunate enough to attend the innovative Royal Normal College for the Blind outside London whose music-intensive curriculum suited his gifts. For more than forty years he was the Organist at the Free St George’s Church in Edinburgh and he travelled the English-speaking world repeatedly on concert tours.

The Fountain Reverie features soft rippling arpeggios with a contrasting middle section. As with the Festival Toccata published at the same time the brilliance of Fountain Reverie disguises the fact that one does not need to be a virtuoso to play it well and effectively and it plays well on many different Organs.Percy Fletcher was an English composer conductor and Orchestrator of prodigious output who made his career in the lively world of the London music theatre of the years of the late 19th and early 20th century. He was music director at many theatres including His Majesty’s Theatre for the last seventeen years of his life. He was the Orchestrator and conductorfor the big budget spectacular theatre piece Chu Chin Chow which ran for five years a record that remained unbroken for forty years. In addition to his myriad works of light music Fletcher also wrote a serious church cantata The Passion of Christ as well as the delightful children’s work The Walrus and the Carpenter.

The piece was first performed as part of the Aldeburgh Festival on 9 June 2013 at Orford Church Suffolk by the New London Children’s Choir directed by Ronald Corp. Scored for SSA with Piano accompaniment On The Green incorporates words by the English romantic poet William Blake.
