The magnificent interweaving of harmonies and dialogue-like Voices in Handel 's For Unto Us A Child Is Born make it a perfect addition to the festive choral repertoire. German-born British Baroque composer George Frideric Handel originally composed this piece in 1741 for the English-language oratorio Messiah which eventually became one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. As the last song of Scene 3 of Part I of the oratorio which addresses Isaiah's specific prophecy about the virgin birth of a Messiah For Unto Us A Child Is Born tells the news of Christmas thebirth of a son in Isaiah's words as found in the Scripture (Isaiah 9:6). The delicate familiar theme is introduced by the Sopranos and taken up by their counter-voices the Tenors later the same dialog is given over to the Altos and Basses. The tutti culminates in 'Wonderful' 'Counselor' 'The Mighty God' 'The Everlasting Father' and 'The Prince of Peace'.

Bernard Hughes ' Psalm 56 for unaccompanied SATB choir. This work was the winner of the Elysian Singers Composition Competition in celebration of the choir's 30th anniversary. It was premiered on 15 October 2016 at St. James's Church Piccadilly London by the Elysian Singers conducted by Sam Laughton. Duration: approx. 3 1/2 minutes. However two unexpected things occur: first the composer sets the original Psalm inscription 'To the chief Musician...' in a kind of remotefaux-bourdon style and then he uses Latin for the final verse together with a slower and more lush choral style'. The piece is a setting of texts by English poet John Donne and it was commissioned in 1984 by the BBC for the 30th anniversary of the BBC Northern Singers. This wonderful work includes a wealth of lush harmonies created by the sizeable sixteen voices. The solid interplay of 4 different bass melodies lay an immense foundation for the 8 different soprano and alto voices lending an exquisite weight to the lyrical beauty of Donne's poetry. A joy to sing this unique a cappella piece is sure to be the highlight of any performance.
