The first of a trilogy of choral works A Year's Carols for SATB Choir and Organ commissioned by David Whitehead and the choir of St John's Cathedral Portsmouth.

'Church music ' Kenneth Leighton once wrote 'is undoubtedly a channel of communication for me' - one that remained open throughout his working life. The distinguished post-war Birtish composer’s sacred and liturgical music is widely known and performed regularly across the UK and in other countries. His lifelong passion for the music of Bach is reflected in his work for Organ which is widely credited with injecting new life and vigour into the British Organ repertoire of the late 20th century. Just as many other of his over 100 compositions the Sarum Mass is published by Novello and Co. Arranged for SSAATTBB Voices and Organ this piecereflects the strong sense of lyricism diatonicism contrapuntal mastery chromaticism and rhythmic invention typical for Leighton ’s works. Ave Verum Corpus by Paul Mealor for SATB divisi chorus unaccompanied.

Commissioned by the sound festival for The Scottish Flute Trio. First performance: November 13 2008. Duff House Banff Scotland. In this work all three players in turn play each of the three instruments - piccolo flute and alto flute - thus giving a contrasted sound to match the character of the four linked movements: hence the title. Sleepy using all three alto flutes begins on the lowest note - G. The mood gradually changes as they introduce higher pitches and faster rhythms as they 'wake up'. In Lyrical a flute introduces the melody which is then shared by a second flute and later by the alto flute. With Mischievous the piccolos arrive on the scene. The first oneincites another piccolo and then the flute to join in. The tempo quickens and after a brief climax the mood quietens leading to Peaceful. In this last movement all three instruments are played. In turn they present a lyrical melody but in different keys so as to suit their individual tessituras.

Darkness Visible interlaces two texts born of the Commonwealth of England (1649-1660). John Milton who had been in the service of the Parliamentary cause and Henry Vaughan a staunch Royalist find common ground in their descriptions of a post-Restoration underworld.

This Renaissance verse anthem alternates passages of two solo Voices with Choral sections is a testament to his mastery of this form.Organist Keyboard player and composer Orlando Gibbons was not only a composer of beautiful music.
