Pieces For Angela is a collection of eight exquisite miniatures for the Piano written in 1966 by Kenneth Leighton . Intended for children they are perhaps best suited for gifted amateurs. On the face of it they seem to be endowed with a simple charm and echoes of William Walton but are seen by some commentators to be hiding a darker more psychological side. Kenneth Leighton (1929-1988) was a Yorkshireman and one of the most distinguished post-war composers in Britain. While he is best known for his choral works he also wrote 3 symphonies for orchestra and being a fine pianist himself also wrote regularly for the Piano. Hisworks are often characterised by a warmth and sympathy for the ensemble he is writing for.

Variations Nocturne & Finale On An English Sea-Song for Piano and Orchestra Op.60. Orchestral part arranged for a second Piano by David Lyon. After a brief introduction to the Orchestra the melody of an eighteenth century whalermen's ballad with verse and refrain 'Blow Ye Winds' is given out the verse by the Piano the refrain divided between Orchestra and Piano. Then follow thirteen variations the last three being pianistic etudes accompanied Orchestrally. The nocturne evokes the nostalgia of a long voyage and the finale the excitement dangers and glory of a triumphant chase. In these movements as well as in the variations the entiremusical material is derived from the basic theme. The work is designed as a virtuoso concert-piece for the pianist with supporting Orchestral flashes of colour and points of contrast.

The works included in the Hugo Parry Organ Album Book 1 are the Fantasia and Fugue published 1912 and related to earlier versions from 1877 and1882 Chorale Fantasia on Old 100th and the magnificent Elegy for 7 April 1913 for the funeral of Sidney 14th Earl of Pembroke. The later years of Organist teacher and composer Hubert Parry’s life were a fruitful time of composition and academic output. In these three works his commitment to diatonic music and his assimilation of both Brahms and indigenous British music are apparent as well as his mastery and understanding of his instrument.
