This `homage to Bach' was awarded the Feruccio Busoni prize when it was premiered by a very young Maurizio Pollini (just 14) in 1956. Considered as one of the main milestones in Leighton's piano music in it the composer extends the Bach/Busoni legacy in a single movement of contrasting sections that build a constantly evolving structure one that is powerfully cumulative and rigorously controlled.

The second sonata is on a much larger scale than the first and has three movements which develop in intensity reaching a climax in the last movement which is a passacaglia. It is a stormy work in the sense that it opens peacefully and closes in a similar manner with a heavy shower of notes and ideas in between. There is little hint of this in the gentle opening of the first movement and although it follows the pattern of its previous sonata in developing a climax and releasing it again it is not until the scherzo with its powerful motor rhythms that the full fury of the storm breaks. The concluding passacaglia is built on repetition. The nature of the form partymakes this inevitable but repetition becomes a subtext with the idea of speeding up to a climax being itself repeated the second time subsiding into the peace of a storm blown out. © John Joubert

Contemporary British composer Brian Kelly has composed a series of place-inspired suites including the Cuban Suite and the New Orleans Suite. The Suite Parisienne’s four movements suggest the Paris of years gone by – Quartier Latin Promenade Memoire Moulin Rouge – in music that shows a deep understanding of brass instruments and a lively sophisticated setting of melodies that are almost but not quite French tunes. The solistic opportunities for each instrument are generously shared and the three livelier movements make a brilliant frame for the longing tone of the Memoire movement.

Shortly before his death Giovanni Pergolesi moved to the Franciscan monastery in Pozzuoli where he composed his last works. Among these is his Stabat mater which reveals the infusion into church composition of the operatic style. Pergolesi's grand work features a lively declamation of the text and great melodic appeal and expressiveness. Underlying everything is the contrapuntal background that was expected in music composed for the church at this time. The original version was for two soloists and small ensemble; this version has been arranged by Desmond Ratcliffe to include SATB Chorus Organ and Strings - but here the accompaniment is replaced by aPiano reduction.
