Arthur Bliss was born in London on 2 August 1891. For over 50 years he was a familiar and central figure on the English musical scene. He was educated at Rugby and at Pembroke College Cambridge where he studied with Charles Wood. He attended the Royal College of Music for a single term before the First World War broke out and interrupted his studies for the duration. These Schumann songs set to poems by Heinrich Heine are a deeply psychological and disturbing journey as they reflect more often than not the bitterness of unrequited love. The most cheerful songs begin as deceptively happy experiences which ultimately turn sour as they eventually reveal themselves as somewhat despairing looks at love. Cyril Scott was an English composer writer and poet. He was essentially a late romantic composer whose style was at the same time strongly influenced by impressionism. His harmony was notably exotic. Scott wrote around four hundred works which include two mature symphonies three operas three Piano concertos concertos for Violin Cello Oboe and Harpsichord several overtures four oratorios as well as a mass of chamber music. Scott composed his Concerto For Oboe & Orchestra in 1946. The three movements ( Molto vigoroso – Andante Pastorale:Tranquillo and Rondo giocoso: Allegronon troppo – cadenza – Con spirit ) are published here with a Piano reduction of the orchestra accompaniment. Complete performance time of the entire piece is approximately 20 minutes.

In Praise of Mary was based on various texts adoring Mary the Mother of Jesus. Sir Granville Bantock (1868-1946) was a British composer conductor and educator. He channelled his energetic and creative personality into many musical projects championing the works of Jean Sibelius founding the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and composing many splendid classical pieces. Viewed by his contemporaries as out-of-date his music is now beingappreciated as one of the last great contributions from the English Romantic movement.
