A former chorister at Christ Church Cathedral Dublin he was largely self-taught as a composer. It was published as the composer's opus 41 in three arrangements: No. 1 is for medium voice and is set in the Key of G major. Versions for low and high voices are also available. The text is from a poem by Arthur L. Salmon . Edward Elgar (1857-1934) is one of England’s best-known and most-loved composers. He was self-taught as composer coming from outside the musical and social establishment which allowed his music to be fresh and unencumbered.

G F Handel (1685-1759) was a German-born British composer and organist who spent his life working in London. He is credited with popularising opera and oratorio in Britain both importing Italian works and composing his own. The Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847) has been highly regarded in Britain from the time of his first visit in 1829. The highlight of his career came in 1846 when he was commissioned to write the oratorio Elijah for the Birmingham Festival. It remained hugely popular for over eight decades being performed at the Proms every year until 1930. It draws heavily on influences from Bach and Handel both of whom Mendelssohn admired.
