El remanso del pitido has been commissioned by the London Sinfonietta for the London Sinfonietta Chorus who give the first performance this evening. It is a work of nostalgia a lament for the decline of steam engines - the stillness of the whistle. Based mainly on a poem by the Spanish writer Gregorio Corral. The setting is for twelve voices eight of them singing through close microphones. The work is fourth in a series of pieces derived from 13th Century homophonic Spanish cantigas and canciones. The final series of works will form a sort of song-book the composer's own accounts of early Spanish music. The idea of a song-book is contained in the title of the firstwork of the series Cancionero para una mariposa.

Composer's note: Mass Observation is a meditation on the histories of our varied ambivalent relationships with surveillance in its myriad guises. The use of technologies that sate our desires to be watched and heard (safety tracking empowerment and pride) has in some sense always been able to be weighed against our anxieties around invasions of privacy (physical and psychological harm hacking subjugation and embarrassment). The work takes its title from the British social research organisation Mass-Observation which aimed to record everyday life in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1937 Mass-Observation controversially paid investigators to anonymously record people's conversation and behaviour at work on the street and at various public occasions including public meetings sporting and religious events. Scored for chorus and percussion sextet Mass Observation ebbs and flows between various polarities (human voices and percussion instruments pitched and unpitched sounds clear and opaque tonalities) over the course of its thirteen movements. There is a ritualistic nature to the overall pacing of the work reminiscent of a liturgical mass setting. The two groups of musicians are rarely aligned: for much of the piece they watch and listen to one another in silence. Benjamin Frankel's reputation is based on the cycle of five string quartets and eight symphonies which together with the powerfully beautiful concertos for violin and for viola rather overshadow many of his other fine pieces. The Violin Concerto grew from the composer's long and close association with Max Rostal a friendship which also inspired one of Frankel's perhaps best known compositions the First Sonata for Solo Violin. SELENE: The Goddess of the Moon who drives across the night sky in her chariot to visit the sleeping Endymion. She was once seduced by Pan.
