Aztec Dances was commissioned by Christopher Orton with the assistance of the BBC Performing Arts Fund. The first performance was given by Christopher Orton (recorder) and Magdalena Nasidlak (piano) at a concert in the Manchester Midday Concerts series at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester in March 2010. The version for flute and piano was premiered by Wissam Boustany (Flute) and Aleksander Szram (Piano) at St James’s Church Piccadilly on Thursday 19 May 2011. 1. Ritual/Pastorale 2. Fertility Dance 3. Ghost Dance/Song 4. Sacrificial Dance Composer's Note The idea for the genesis of this work and indeed its title and individual movements came after visiting an exhibition at the British Museum entitled Moctezuma –Aztec Ruler. The exhibition traced the events following the election in 1502 of Moctezuma as Supreme Ruler of the Aztecs and the subsequent invasion of 1519 by a Spanish expedition led by Hermán Cortés – an event that was to eventually lead to the demise of the Aztec civilisation. Part of the exhibition explored the role that music and dance played in Aztec life. The primitive recorder together with trumpets and drums were used as an important part of the formal ritual ceremonies (including rather gruesomely human sacrifice) that took place to appease the many Gods which the Aztecs worshipped as well as for other more informal occasions in their social and cultural life. I have tried to reflect some of these highly contrasting and dramatic ideas in this four movement work. Edward Gregson

This title is taken from the compilation French Songs And Choruses For Mixed-Voice Choir (NOV165198) While not as overtly demanding as Apres un reve perhaps the most difficult of Faure's songs this composition requires not only a sense of line and of delicacy but rarely supplies the exact pitch to the singer before he or she embarks on the highly exposed vocal lines. The accompaniment often does supply the pitch right after the singer which makes it easy for the singer to correct any misteps--and for the audience to notice problems. The accompaniment is typical Faure with almost constant use of arpeggios and almost no heavy chords giving the feeling of transparency thatcharacterizes so many of his songs. The vocal lines are equally graceful and typically Faure in flowing descending phrases. Novello New Choral Series- Craig McLeish writes of The Negro Speaks of Rivers ; Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was the first black American to earn his living from writing. He was an innovator of jazz poetry becoming part of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s. He wrote plays short stories novels and his poetry was widely read. He was also a journalist columnist and lecturer. The Negro Speaks of Rivers was perhaps his earliest published work written when only 17 and while travelling by train to Mexico to visit his father. As the train crossed the Mississippi he suddenly began thinking about how rivers had impacted on Negro history particularly in the fight against slavery. The four rivers mentioned in the poem lent themselves to using musical influences from those particular regions. However I have tried to keep these links fairly tenuous to avoid overt pastiche. A few years ago I was fortunate enough to work with Congolese musicians. These sessions led to the intricate rhythms in The Congo . The Mississippi mentions New Orleans so a jazz fugue seemed the most appropriate compositional device to weave into the texture. The spirit of The Nile was gauged from many hours listening avidly to Egyptian music. Craig McLeish began his musical life as a chorister at St Paul's Cathedral. As a bass guitarist conductor musical arranger and composer he has worked with a wide variety of groups in several genres and scored a hit with the cult pop band Fat & Frantic'. He is musical director of Young Voices UK and conducts several youth and community choirs in and around Milton Keynes. Listen to an excerpt from Craig McLeish 's The Negro Speaks Of Rivers :
