This is the full score of Herbert Howells' 1950 composition Hymnus Paradisi for Soprano and Tenor Soli SATB chorus and orchestra. Now available for the first time in print this score has been prepared from the known sources revised and edited with critical commentary and includes a preface by Paul Spicer and introductory notes by Sir David Willcocks. Four of the choral movements (II-V) are settings of Latin and English texts. These are drawn from the Psalms and the 'Miss pro defunctis' the book of Common Prayer and are immemorial reflections upon the transient griefs and indestructible hopes of mankind. All are appropriate to the mood and purpose ofa Requiem. Movement VI is a setting of lines from the Salisbury Diurnal used here in the translation by Dr G. H. Palmer appearing at the end of Robert Bridges' Anthology The Spirit of Man. The first performance was at the Three Choirs Festival at Gloucester on 7th September 1950 which the composer conducted. The Bach Choir gave the first London performance early in 1951 and recorded the work in 1970 with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Sir David Willcocks.

Somethin’ Stupid was a smash hit duet for Frank and Nancy Sinatra in 1967 and again for Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman in 2001. This inspired Rhumba flavoured take on the classic track adds some spicy Latin heat to the original's floating jazzy vibes. Arranged by Patrick Gazard for SAB choruses with piano accompaniment this lively choral pop encourages choristers to pick up their maracas and indulge in the smoky atmosphere of the dance of love.

Thomas Hewitt Jones ' Carnival . Composed 2010. Written for Martin Neary President of the Organists Charitable Trust. These five short works are all extracted from the excellent Little Organ Book from the Organists Charitable Trust edited by Martin Neary and first published by Novello in 2010. This is a wonderful resource of 11 mainly new works by British composers all of moderate difficulty and well-defined character. Iain Farrington's Bluesday is full of delicious harmonies with a bold climax framed by a gentle beginning and ending. David Bednall's Fanfare is a joyful work that would bea good recital opener or festival voluntary with a chance to unleash the big reeds. The simplicity of the title of Howells's Cradle Song belies a richness and warmth that make this a moving miniature. John Rutter's evening prelude from 1979 on the plainsong hymn Te lucis ante terminum is tender and clear with some surprisingly plangent harmonies. Thomas Hewitt Jones's Carnival is an outburst of festivity and bravura. All these pieces are very much worth playing though organists interested in more than two of them would be better served purchasing a copy of the original anthology which is still very well priced (Little Organ Book Novello 9781849386814 £9.95). - Sunday by Sunday

Composer Herbert Howells is most widely known for the church music he wrote toward the later part of his career though his secular works are undoing a much-deserved revaluation. But this work for baritone Voice Violin Cello and Organ dates from a much earlier stage of his life. Howells had suffered severe ill health in 1917 just at the time Babylon was written and had withdrawn from his first appointment at Salisbury Cathedral. It was also the time he wrote his Elegy full of loss and transience composed in memory of a friend killed in the First World War.The dramatic even operatic scale of emotion in By the Waters of Babylon brings the anguish of the piece right tothe fore. It is definitely a Howells composition underpinned by solid structure and displaying chromatic sensuousness. The words are one of the great lamentations and Howells has enhanced their effect in this mighty work.

John Denver became a star as a bright-eyed clear-voiced singer-songwriter in glasses and a cowboy hat. His love for the environment and his then wife Annie Martell inspired the romantic and wildly successful Annie’s Song which is said to have been written in ten minutes on a ski lift. Here it has been arranged for female SSA choir with piano accompaniment by Frank Metis.
