Dans DOGON Kevin Houben nous séduit par un voyage vers les pentes abruptes de la vallée Dogon en Afrique de l’Ouest. Le peuple Dogon considère la vallée à la fois comme une menace et comme une promesse pour lavenir une dualité exprimée par deslignes mélodiques sombres. Après de mystérieux accords émerge un passage plus tempéré. Enfin trois solistes se font entendre (au cor à la trompette et au saxophone soprano) ils apportent une conclusion colorée et vivifiante rappelant lesspectaculaires danses masquées des Dogons.

Hippo Hop is a fun piece for young and old alike. Hippo the hippopotamus is in the mood for a dance but can he actually do it? “The proof of the pudding is in the eating!” he says to himself as he strides over the African plains. The other animals look on admiringly as Hippo tries a little jump: hip hop… It’s going so well! A stirring melody line is played throughout the entire concert band with every part playable yet challenging.

This legend takes us back to the middle of the 18th century in Belgium. The young Léandre is a little boy who lives in the hilly region of western Hainaut. He contributes to the building of a wall surrounding the city intended to resist potential attacks from outside.

The Dark Angel- Abaddon was commissioned by the NLBB (Noord-Limburgse Brassband – North Limburg Brass Band) from Belgium. Abaddon is the demon reigning over the underworld. In the New Testament – in the Book of Revelation by John (9:11) – he is calledthe angel of the bottomless pit. The work Abaddon lives up to its name. Technically and physically it holds an enormous challenge for every band in the champions division. The composition has a traditional form structure (fast–slow–fast) and it consists of ornamentationsaround the letters IVAN after Ivan Meylemans the conductor who since 2001 has obtained great successes with the NLBB and who in this case has also been essential in taming the demon in Abaddon .

Tonight the sea will be awash with pink! Flamingos from everywhere are flying in for a rockin’ party. Their long legs prance around to the beat circling each other as their beaks chatter all night long. Who else wants to go to the Flamingo Rock? Kevin Houben’s new composition is full of little rhythmic and harmonic challenges perfect for bands both young and old. But beware once you start playing the tune you just might not be able to stop!

The Little Musketeer (Le petit mousquetaire) est une œuvre caractéristique de Luc Gistel : un ton léger une écriture en toute spontanéité la fraîcheur de la jeunesse - public cible du compositeur - et une proximité avec le public de 7 à 77 ans. On égrène la musique avec l’insouciance juvénile de Charlotte la petite-fille de Luc Gistel qui est l’initiatrice du motif rythmique des premières mesures de cette œuvre gaie et décomplexée. This dazzling suite portrays the side of the armed forces that is oftenoverlooked - the vital role they play as peacekeepers throughout theworld. Each of the four movements shows an aspect of military life- the precision of a military parade the splendour of the officers' ball the sadness of remembering those who have lost their lives and thehope that someday there will be peace throughout the world. This trulycompelling work will make a great addition to any concert.

Félicien Doyen the President of the Tornacum Royal Choir Circle of Tournai (Belgium) and a close friend of the composer commissioned this Mass. Missa Tornacum was originally composed for mixed choir and organ gave a memorable performance of thepiece in the Chartres Cathedral in France.Although it does not include the Credo the work is composed according to the traditional structure of a Mass in five parts : Kyrie Gloria Sanctus Agnus Dei and Ite missa est. En the first two parts adialogue is created between the choir and the band. It is followed by the Sanctus cycle (Sanctus - Hosanna - Benedictus) which is remarkable for the contrasts between the tone colorscharacterizing each of its three parts. The fourth part Agnus Dei takes on a tone of serene intimacy. A free counterpoint draws this section to a close by fading into an almost imperceptible quietness. Ite missa est begins with a series of imitations which develop into a majestic and cheerful passagemarking the end of the Mass. Choir parts are available separately.

Who Want to Live Forever is a rather grim title given Freddie Mercury’s untimely death but his songs and especially his recordings with Queen will live on forever. The title refers to the immortal Connor MacLeod from the movie Highlander and reached number 24 on the British charts. Now Thijs Oud’s arrangement lets this song live on forever as part of your brass band’s repertoire.

The Broken Sword is one of the five ceremonial swords kept in the Tower of London and is used during the coronation of a new king or queen. Legend has it that an angel broke off the tip of the sword in an effort to prevent an unjust killing. Composer Kevin Houben lets his music retell this intriguing legend. Broken Sword resembles a film score in many ways and will paint vivid images as the band plays its way through the legend. Many different moods create a contrast-rich work that makes for an exciting listening and playing experience every time!
