He is best remembered for his superb orchestral works such as Basque Melodies which were often transcribed for the Piano. Guridi wrote 7 pieces for the Harp of which Viejo Zortzico is certainly the most popular today. Composed in 1949 and premiered in 1950 it wasn’t published until 1960. Simply entitled Old Zortzico it is inspired by the traditional Basque dance of the same name a popular reel in 5/8 time. This famous musician and priest was born in Calanda on the 4th of April of 1640. He studied and taught at the University of Salamanca as a profesor of music. He was the organist of the viceroy of Napoles. He is thought to have died in Madrid in 1710 and is often described as the greatest Spanish guitar theologian of the 17th century. This suite was written in 1674.

At the early age of twelve Geronimo Gimenez was already among the 1st violins at the Teatro Principal in Spain and by the age of seventeen he was conducting opera and zarzuela performances in his hometown of Seville Spain. became the conductor at the Teatro Apolo. After his tenure there he went on to conduct at the Teatro de la Zarzuela which was founded by fellow zarzuela composer Francisco Barbieri. Among some of his most popular zarzuelas is 'La Boda de Luis Alonso' (1897)
