Ed Hughes ' Sky Blue for solo Clarinet and Orchestra. A4 study score. ' This concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra is approximately eight minutes long. It was composed especially for Alison Hughes (clarinettist) and the University of Sussex Symphony Orchestra. Sky Blue is inspired by a painting of the same name made in 1940 by Wassily Kandinsky in which figures appear to float free across a clear blue sky. The painting has been described (by Mona Molarsky 2009) as 'an ethereal Miró-like confection with biomorphic squiggles that buzz like glimmering insects in the afternoon sun'. The music is a continuous single movement with moments of harmonic transparency contrasting withsections of greater modal complexity. There are some sections which also feature soloists in the orchestra perhaps like the free-floating figures in Kandinsky's painting. Mezzo Soprano Version-Moj e Bukura Moré (My Beautiful Morea) has its origin in Southern Italy in Calabria where an Albanian community has lived for more than 500 years and so has the song! The tenderness of the melodic lines expresses the natural beauty of the distant homeland which according to legend can be seen from the Calabrian mountain-tops. As in most folk songs this tune is remarkably short; the melody itself has not been altered but has been extended enriched in texture and presented in different ways. The melodic lines serve as a point of departure for the proliferation of a distinct harmonic vocabulary. - Thomas Simaku' Moj e Bukura Moré (My Beautiful Morea) has its origin in Southern Italy in Calabria where an Albanian community has lived for more than 500 years and so has the song! The latest in a series of pieces written for CoMA string players Bee Haven is a sound environment an imaginary outdoor space populated by plants flowers and bees. The sound of honeybee humming is the main focus of the work; around this the bees' haven' (a living environment free from agricultural poisons and habitat destruction) is created through quiet air noise and gentle brushing of the instruments. There are no events in the piece save one brief flurry of rain; placing themselves within it listeners become part of the imagined space for the duration of the work.
