Zwei- und dreistimmige Inventionen-Johann Sebastian Bach's Inventions and Sinfonias better known as two- and three-part inventions were an integral part of the teaching repertoire used in the composer's piano lessons. And they still are! For piano pupils there is no getting away from them for their basic demands that is to learn to play in tune' and to achieve to play in a cantabile style' are still valid. The new edition of the Wiener Urtext Edition follows consistently Bach's autograph fair copy. Ornamented versions from copies by Bach's pupils providing an insight into Bach's ornamentation have been printed separately; any mixing of the differentversions has been deliberately avoided. A suggestion has been made by means of an example for the realization of the ornament signs of Sinfonia No. 5. The notes on interpretation and the critical remarks provide information on further aspects of the performance practice. They are to be considered as suggestions and encouragement to study works the execution of which had not been laid down to the last detail thus opening up a wide range of creative possibilities for teaching. This volume takes into account the most recent research and is based on the first edition printed in 1799 and subsequent reprints published during Beethoven’s lifetime. The latter are of particular importance as secondary sources as neither the autograph nor any MS copies closely related to the autograph have survived. The restrained editorial practice of these early prints served as a model for the minimum of careful editorial intervention in these volumes. The layout is distinguished by its clarity easy legibility and sensible page-turns making this edition eminently suitable for practical performance. The present volume like all Wiener Urtext editions alsocontains an informative preface filling in the historical background detailed notes on interpretation and a Critical Commentary. Although Robert Schumann absolutely loved to play a duet he wrote only few works for piano duet. Created in 1848 Bilder aus dem Osten Op. 66 was one of the best-known and most frequently played works in the piano duet literature until the 20th century. But the Polonaises Op. 3 by the 18-year-old composer following the example of Franz Schubert and even exceeding him in harmonic boldness and tonal ingenuity already show the self-taught Schumann on the way to his own style. After volume 1 which contains the easier works composed for music teaching purposes volume 2 now contains the charming yet hardly known Ballszenen Op. 109 in addition to the two above-mentioned works. The newedition of the Wiener Urtext Edition based on the musical text of the New Schumann Complete Edition (edited by Joachim Draheim and Bernhard Appel) provides for the first time a reliable original text based on the sources especially for the 8 Polonaises which had been inadequately edited up to now. The appendix contains the popular Fantasiestücke Op. 73 (originally for clarinet and piano) edited by the composer and future Schumann researcher Friedrich Gustav Jansen. The arrangement published in 1851 had been revised and thus been authorized by Schumann himself. Although Robert Schumann absolutely loved to play a duet he wrote only few works for Piano duet. The “Little Organ Book” perhaps the most celebrated collection ever of chorale preludes owes its title to J.S. Bach’s application for the post of Cantor at St Thomas’ Church in Leipzig. Lacking an academic degree Bach wanted to demonstrate his qualifications as a teacher through his compositions – including his Inventions Sinfonias and the “Well Tempered Klavier”. This also led him to append a misleading title to the most ambitious project of his time at Weimar: he called this collection of chorale preludes - originally meant to number 164 pieces - pieces for an “aspiring organist”. In fact the 44 completed compositions of the “Little Organ Book” are demanding masterpieceswhich give an impressive display of the full range of the so-called short chorale prelude. This new critical edition returns for the first time to the format of the principal sources dating from Bach’s time in that most of the pieces are reproduced on two systems rather than three. incl. Christian Petzold: Suite de Clavecin-The 1725 Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach is chiefly famous for pieces such as the two minuets in G major and G minor (Nos. 4 and 5 in the present collection) and the Aria di Giovannini. These three indeed the majority of the pieces were not composed by J. S. Bach but by other often fairly unknown musicians. Though begun by her husband Anna Magdalena Bach compiled the Notebook for her own domestic use. A definite asset to the collection is the Suite de Clavecin by Christian Petzold organist at the Dresden court which contains the two minuets mentioned above. This new Wiener Urtext Edition of J.S. Bach's English Suites addresses particularly the problematic question of extinct secondary sources. With Bach's autograph no longer surviving the edition attempts to extract the original text from a plethora of manuscript copies by means of detailed comparisons and deduction. The edition attempts to amend passages that appear to be corrupted in all available sources and by careful reasoning bring them closer to Bach's probable intentions. All editorial decisions are documented in an extensive critical commentary with the aim of enabling the readers to conduct their own critical evaluation of the musical text. Easy Piano Pieces with Practising Tips-With the new Urtext Primo series the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116) Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8) works by three different composers are selected for each volume of the Urtext Primo series with the aim of offering piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. The pieces' range of levels of difficulty isrelatively narrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. This is what distinguishes the Urtext Primo approach from almost all common anthologies. The selected repertoire takes into account not only pieces of the classic canon of lessons but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for piano lessons. The Urtext Primo volumes are published in the internationally recognised standard of the Wiener Urtext editions. The explanations included in each volume shall help to deepen the knowledge of musical styles music history and piano playing. A repertoire chart at the end of each volume gives a rough overview of the levels of difficulty of the selected pieces.Volume 4 combines works of the German Romanticism by Schumann Brahms and Theodor Kirchner. Apart from well known pieces from Schumann's 'Album for the Youth' and the easiest waltzes from opus 39 (in the easier version) by Brahms the selection contains the attractive set of variations from Schumann's first Youth Sonata Op. 118/1 and Brahms’ Saraband in A minor WoO 5/1 as well as a number of pleasant pieces by Theodor Kirchner which continue the tonal air of Schumann and Brahms in easy playable pieces. Mozart's works for piano duet form the first highlight of this genre which later is only achieved by Franz Schubert. The two early sonatas from the Salzburg period which are particularly suited for music teaching in secondary schools are opposed to three effective compositions from his Viennese period. The present volume also contains the sonata KV 19d the authenticity of which is not confirmed as well as two fragmentary movements dated from Mozart's last years of life KV 357. Robert D. Levin has completed them true to style for practical use taking the limitations of the keyboards of the Mozart pianos and the composer's personal style into account unlike as in the firstedition of ca. 1860. In the appendix there are the two fantasias KV 594 and 608 originally composed for mechanical organ adapted from the earliest arrangements for piano duet published a few years after Mozart's death. In this edition the music text is published in the form of a score for the first time.
