Sonatas Wq 75-78 Arioso Wq 79 Fantasie Wq 80-Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's works for violin and harpsichord obbligato pervade his entire compositional oeuvre. The earliest works like the Sonata in D minor still numbered BWV 1036 date back to the years of study with his father yet show already a remarkable creative will of his own. The latest work the fantasia 'C. P. E. Bachs Empfindungen' in F flat minor of 1787 is characterized by the composer's highly expressive late style. The new two-volume edition of Wiener Urtext Edition contains C. P. E. Bach's complete works for harpsichord (piano) obbligato and violin. Vol. 1 contains not only the sonatas Wq 71–74 and BWV 1036 but also the arrangements of the trios Wq143–145 for violin and harpsichord most of which are included in C. P. E. Bach's autographs as well as a – previously ignored – early version of Wq 71 which like BWV 1036 grants a rare insight into the early works of the composer. Vol. 2 contains the four major sonatas of 1763 which already fascinated Johannes Brahms. Brahms not only played them in concert together with Joseph Hellmesberger but also published two of these sonatas in 1864. This volume concludes with the two late works 'Arioso' and 'Fantasie' of 1781 and 1787 respectively. With these works C. P. E. Bach bridged the gap between the late Baroque sonatas of his father and the early classical 'Klaviersonate mit begleitender Violine' [Piano Sonata with Accompanying Violin]. At the age of four Mozart astounded his father with his understanding of the piano. His first works were simple dance settings written when he was five at which point his musical abilities were developing at a tremendous speed. The earliest pieces are recorded in the music book for Maria Anna Mozart the so-called 'Nannerl-Notenbuch'. These pieces are ideal for elementary teaching. Apart from the popular minuets which form part of every piano beginner's repertoire the edition also contains expanded individual settings such as the fragmentary piano piece in B flat major KV 9b made playable by Robert D. Levin's edition and thus becoming a valuable addition to the teachingliterature. At the age of four Mozart astounded his father with his understanding of the Piano. Antonio Vivaldi's sonatas for violin and basso continuo are among the most valuable works written between the violin sonatas by Arcangelo Corelli and those by Johann Sebastian Bach. With his 12 Sonatas Op. 2 Vivaldi presents a multi-faceted spectrum of forms and possibilities of performance and expression. The new edition of the Wiener Urtext Edition is based on both the first Venetian edition and the edition of the publisher Roger from Amsterdam which was published only a little later. On this basis we have got a much more logical musical text in the new edition. This edition not only contains the solo violin part and a continuo score with realized basso continuo but also afigured bass part which gives experienced continuo players the opportunity to improvise on the basso continuo part and can also be used by a continuo cellist. This new edition indicates that Mozart’s popular composition is a mature work dating from his time in Vienna contrary to previous assumptions and that the traditional ending does not correspond to the original version. The well-known closing bars which have of course been included in this edition were not in fact written by Mozart himself but probably by August Eberhard Müller who thereby shaped the piece to stand on its own. Mozart’s manuscript version however as documented in the first edition ends ten bars earlier on a dominant seventh chord leaving the way open for further development and making it conceivable that the Fantasie was originally written as anintroduction to a sonata in D major (to another of the late sonatas K 576 in fact). With this information the edition adds a totally new dimension to the performance of this widely known piece. Newly re-discovered in the run-up to the Schumann Yearabout three years ago a previously unknown manuscript of an album leaf for piano by Robert Schumann was found in the Leopold Sophien Library of Überlingen. The little piano piece entitled 'Ahnung' had been given and dedicated by Klara Schumann to a friend of hers the lithographer and writer Julius Allgeyer. In the Wiener Urtext Edition series this little work is published for the first time in the run-up to the Schumann Year 2010. A print of the rediscovered Schumann autograph is included in the edition. The expressive relatively easy-to-play piece adds to the Romantic piano repertoire.
