Born in the Italian city of Naples Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) was one of the few Baroque composers to transition into the Classical period. Scarlatti composed operas cantatas symphonias and liturgical pieces but his 555 keyboard sonatas are most well-known: a vast collection of single movements in binary form. Lily Afshar's arrangement of Sonata K. 11 (a favorite of Segovia) utilizes staccato articulation reminiscent of the harpsichord and othertechniques including cross-string trills and minimal slurs. The pair of sonatas work well together written in E minor and E major.Sylvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750) was the most accomplished lutenist of the Baroque periodand the most prolific composer of lute music writing over one thousand pieces for the instrument. The four pieces arranged in this book show the beautiful polyphony and fantastical writing of Weiss. Afshar utilizes campanella (cross-string) fingerings throughout to emphasize the musical line and produce a fuller sound on the instrument. When Christa Landon presented her printed edition of Joseph Haydn's piano sonatas for the first time Haydn's sonata works were still overshadowed by the works of Mozart and Beethoven. But Haydn's sonatas left the niche of piano lessons long since and have become established in the concert repertoire; Landon's edition certainly played a major role in that. The Haydn anniversary in 2009 is a welcome occasion to thoroughly revise this 'legendary' edition because new sources have been discovered and questions concerning authenticity have been clarified over more than forty years; the editorial principles for 18th-century music in particular have markedly changed in the mean time. The new edition comprises all the works from the previous Wiener Urtext edition plus the Sonata Hob. XVI:16 arranged by Landon as well as a Sonata in F major which was discovered in Bolzano a few years ago and attributed to Joseph Haydn. The new edition too is divided into four volumes the content of which is compatible with that of each of the volumes of the preceding edition. In the notes on interpretation Robert D. Levin explains essential aspects of Haydn's performance practice. Aside from the five great piano concertos it is easy to forget that Beethoven had already turned to this genre in Bonn during his youth. The Concerto in Eb written in 1784 still shows stylistic signs of the influence of Johann Christian Bach’s works. A score of this concerto has not survived- all that remains is a copy of a piano part that was revised by Beethoven. It contains the solo part without any orchestral accompaniment- however when the piano is silent and orchestral tutti passages are interposed it incorporates a piano reduction of the orchestral part. Following the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition the piano concerto can now be performed in itssurviving form – by a pianist without an orchestra. Peter Dickinson 's Celebration Trio (2009) for Clarinet Violin and Piano. The trio comprises of three pieces - Fugue Lullaby and Dance . ' These three pieces derive froma story by the British poet John Heath-Stubbs (1918-2006) called The Unicorns. Two unicorns are discovered ina remote part of Africa. The two countries Eastland and Westland want to obtain specimens for research sothey send out competing expeditions. The Westland technique is to lure the unicorn with a young girl singing - the Lullaby. The Eastland team uses a dancer so that theunicorn impales itself on a tree – the Dance. Both teams are successful in capturing a unicorn but the mythical animals fall in love andescape happily together in the end.In the story the Fugue celebrates the eventual capture of the unicorns but it is placed first here as a celebration of the remarkable career of the Verdehr Trio. Since theybegan in 1972 they have commissioned over 230 works have performed all over the world and made recordings. Asa result they have virtually created the repertoire forthe medium of violin clarinet and piano. I much enjoyed writing my American Trio(Hymns Rags and Blues) for the Trio in 1985; they played it all over the world andhave recorded it; and this Celebration Triois a tribute to their musicianship andphenomenal enterprise ' - Peter Dickinson .
