The solo group consists of a sextet of the woodwind instruments which are normally doubled with more regular members of the orchestra: these six strangers now brought to the fore are piccolo and alto flute cor anglais Eb andbass clarinets and contrabassoon. They make a motley group diverse in colour as in register and one of the tasks of the piece sets itself is to have them blend and cohere both together as an ensemble and in partnership with thestring orchestra (which itself is used with unusual variety and subtlety). Another evident task of the work is to provide fine solos for each member of the woodwind sextet: bright dances for the piccolo recitatives for thealto flute a stoical song from the contrabassoon in the extreme bass. The work is cast as a single movement which begins in the composer's first-movement style of rapid regeneration. This is interrupted by slow interventions including one for divided strings which gives rise to a sextuple cadenza for the soloists. Out of this comes a slow movement or sequence of short slow movements followed by a dancing finale with its own slow episodes. Altogetherthis is music of songs and dances heavily tinged with Scottish rhythms and tonalities: one might think of a magic bagpipe having six chanters and a drone of variegated string texture. This work for woodwind instruments andstring orchestra was commissioned by the Strathclyde Regional Council and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. It is the ninth of ten concerti to be written for principal players of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. The first performancewas given in February 1995 by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by the composer.

A fabulous example of Giovanni Gabrieli’s multi-choir music in which he extends the notion of rhythm and expands tonal colours to create the pulse of the music. In Hodie Christus Natus Est he establishes a remarkable rhythmic counterpoint akin to the swallowing up of rhythms as they mingle and are lost. Note that this is a rather complex piece that will require skilled and disciplined performers to follow their own independent line. This is an ideal choice of material to be used for general festivals or as a rejoiceful Christmas song. This fantastic piece is set for a Double Chorus of Mixed Voices with an Organ accompaniment.

Sadie Harrison 's Quintet: 'No Title Required' was composed in 1994 and revised in 1999. The wonderful work lasts approximately 14 minutes and is arranged for Flute Clarinet Violin Cello and Piano. This piece was commissioned by Double Image who put on the first performance. The title of this work is taken from a poem of the same name by the Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska (winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996) and considers the importance of revolutions tyrannicides and politicalconspiracies in relation to that of skimming shadows fluttering white butterflies and windblown clouds. No Title Required has two movements. The first is fast and virtuosic the second lyrical and colouristic. Both havethe same formal pattern - a series of variations where one aspect of each section provides the theme' for the following variation. Whereas the first movement juxtaposes blocks of material to create a disjunct segmented structure the second weaves lines together to create a single flexible texture (disrupted towards the end by reminiscences' of the work's opening). No Title Required was commissioned by DoubleImage (to whom the work is dedicated) and has received several performances worldwide. The Prince of Sleep to words by Walter de la Mare is a languid setting capturing masterfully the absent-minded sentiments of the words; imagery of dreams and the natural world (especially woodland) always seemed to inspire Elgar . In the Summer of 1925 Elgar produced two songs The Prince of Sleep and The Herald and both were on the subject of death like their immediate predecessor from the year before The Immortal Legions and The Wanderer of the year before that. Michael Kennedy refers to the de la Mare setting as being “in the raptmanner Elgar reserved for special moments of vision” a view with which it is difficult to disagree. The part-song for SATB unaccompanied Voices is now available as part of the Elkin Choral Series. Performance time approximately 5 minutes. Piano accompaniment for practice only.

Originally written for the Violin it has been transcribed for Viola and edited by Leonard Mogill. Students who faithfully follow the instructions given in this edition will find themselves having acquired the correct position of the left hand without which a reliable technique cannot be attained.

This piece was written as a tribute to the people of Fair Isle a remote community that lies between Orkney and Shetland which is also the home of the composer. The work was composed for the Grieg Trio of Norway and reflect theensemble's virtuosity with striking cadenzas that showcase the performers.
