Sinfonia-This attractive overture by Saverio Mercadante is an important example of original composition for band from the 19th century. Mercadante was inspired by themes by Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) from his most famous operas such as Norma and La Sonnambula . Mercadante’s method of composing was similar to Verdi’s who wrote overtures using themes from his operas (such as the overtures to Nabucco and La Forza del Destino for example). The result is a fascinating alternation of lyric and dramatic moments ending in a fast and enthralling finale. This arrangement offers contemporary concert bands access to a composition otherwise forgotten due to itsobsolete instrumentation which differs dramatically from the present one. The original instrumentation included the following instruments: Flute Eb Clarinet Bb Clarinets 1-2-3-4- Eb Horns 1-2-3-4 Bb Flugel Horn Bb Cornets 1-2 Trombones 1-2-3 Bb Bass Flugel Horn Bb Tenor Horn “Pelittoni” (Contrabass Flugel Horns) 1-2 Snare Drum Bass Drum Cymbals. The adaptation to a contemporary instrumentation has been accomplished by taking into account the original ideas so as to maintain the authentic character of the composition.

In Señor Juancito the Belgian composer Johan Nijs tells the unusual story of a rich gruff nobleman who lives on a large estate and does not feel the slightest need to communicate with the outside world. However one particular day the people who live in the nearby village try to convince him to visit the annual village festival. At first he raises objections but the village people insist so finally Señor Juancito gives in and accepts the invitation. The people’s friendliness makes an impact on him and so in the end a new world opens up for him…

Cantilena was commissioned by the London Chamber Music Society to celebrate their move to King's Place in October 2008. First performed by Nicholas Daniel and members of the Chilingirian Quartet at King’s Place London on 5th October 2008. The work is a short lyrical piece where an outsider [the oboe] joins the group [a string trio] and adds to their dialogue. At first the newcomer is treated with a mixture of suspicion and agitation but eventually is made welcome. The oboe is invited to share the musical theme that has been established which he then proceeds to embellish and adorn. He leads the harmonic changes that result in the theme being heard in manydifferent keys. He then introduces a new theme. The excitement grows and leads to a climax. A peaceful coda re-establishes the original theme and all ends harmoniously among the integrated quartet.

Music by James Last-German band leader composer arranger and music producer James Last has created many hits during his long career. Particularly memorable are the theme tunes and soundtracks that he composed for television programs and films. Gilbert Tinner has arranged Last’s award-winning melody from the 1968 TV-film Morgens um sieben (ist die Welt noch in Ordnung) for concert band.

This solo work for flute and wind orchestra takes the form of musical sketches that deal with specific aspects of the flute within the orchestra such as tone technique range and character. Beginning with soft tones in due course the piece buildsaround a virtuoso motif. The orchestra also continually plays an important role by providing a harmonically and rhythmically balanced accompaniment.
