In the tone poem Pan and Syrinx Nielsen began to express some of his more adventurous harmonies and timbres which he then expressed more fully and in more abstract form in his masterpiece Fifth Symphony. Nielsen had an obsession with ancient Greece and its myths and the inspiration for Pan and Syrinx is drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The story concerns the chaste nymph Syrinx who is chased by Pan to the river’s edge where the river nymphs grant her request for assistance bytransforming her into water reeds. From the reeds Pan fashioned his original set of panpipes. Nielsen’s short work expresses the natural world the conflict between the male and female forces the anxiety of chase and transformation and the unsettled ending of the tale. Nielsen frequently chose it for performance when he created a program of his own works. The Orchestral colours are original and striking and display the composer’s restless inventiveness. Indian Sketches-The Dakota (or Sioux) Indians from the American states of North and South Dakota form the central figures in this composition. The work consists of five movements in which the culture and history of these Indians have been portrayed through musical paintings by making use of an old South Dakota Indian melody.

Pleading is a song for solo voice with Piano accompaniment written in 1908. It was composed for and dedicated to the composer's great friend Lady Maud Warrender . It was published as the composer's opus 41 in three arrangements: No. 1 is for medium voice and is set in the Key of G major. Versions for low and high voices are also available. The text is from a poem by Arthur L. Salmon . Edward Elgar (1857-1934) is one of England’s best-known and most-loved composers. He was self-taught as composer coming from outside the musical and social establishment which allowed his music to be fresh and unencumbered.

Heilig-Messe- Bernard of Offida 1604–1694 was a Capuchin monk whose saintly life and devotion to the sick and poor caused him to be beatified by Pope Pius VI on 19 May 1795. St. Bernard’s name day falls on the 11th of September (a Saturday in 1797) and it is generally thought that Haydn combined doing honour to the Capuchin monk with the production of a new Mass for his patron the day thereafter. Apparently later performances in Eisenstadt added horns to double the trumpets in the tuttis and – just as in the previous Mass – the clarinet parts were enlarged; it is almost certain that the new clarinet parts are either by Haydn or (shall we say) “supervised” by him. As inthe Mass in Time of War conductors have the choice of two orchestrations: with or without doubling horns and with or without the supplementary clarinet parts. The Heiligmesse has always been one of Haydn’s most admired works. Its dignity its strength (we draw special attention to the extraordinary “Gratias” with its brilliant contrapuntal writing) the subdued orchestral grandeur to which the B-flat trumpets contribute a silvery but unmartial weight – all these have made it one of Haydn’s most serious and most deeply sensitive church works: its constant popularity in Viennese churches is quite deserved. Stabat Mater Hob.XX bis Oratorio (funeral music) versions from 1767 and 1803 The new scholarly critical edition of Joseph Haydn's Stabat Mater (1767) is published in Henle's complete edition of Haydn's works. This edition is the first to come as close as possible to the lost original and has been compiled using all currently available sources. The score has been fully amended in its original orchestration for two oboes or English horn strings and organ. At a later performance of this work probably in 1803 Haydn attempted to accommodate the intervening changes in musical taste. According to the composer's request and under his supervision SigismundNeukomm enlarged the wind orchestration by adding a flute two clarinets two bassoons two French horns trumpets and timpani.
