The year is 1566 and 2 400 Hungarians and Croatians are waging a hopelessly unbalanced war again Sultan Süleyman’s 100 000 strong army. The small garrison heroically resists the Sultan for as long as they can but in the end must surrender to his sheer numbers. After the dust settles word gets out that the Sultan is in fact no longer alive! The news was kept secret to preserve the troop’s morale. Willy Fransen’s arrangement turns this exciting legend into an equally exciting musical tale that your audience will enjoy from start to finish.

Jan Moretus (1543-1610) was a book printer and publisher in his native city of Antwerp. He worked as assistant to his father-in-law the renowned master printer and publisher Christoffel Plantijn. After Plantijn’s death in 1589 Moretus took over the business.The composition Moretus consists of four parts that draw on the remarkable personality of Jan Moretus aswell as the printing business. In both the titles of the movements and the thematic structure we can see a certain symmetry: a playful allusion to the process of printing.Part 1 A Celebrated Gentleman describes the illustrious figure of Moretus in a festive chorale. In the second part ExpressiveImpressions the printing press itself is brought to life in repeated motifs - despite the industrial mechanical nature of the process the product always has an artistic and cultural dimension. In the third part Impressive Expression the wind band is invited (or challenged) to intone the slow theme with a poignant expressiveness. Part 4 A Gentle Celebration is a celebratory finale with a fresh theme.

This composition paints a picture of brave Vikings sailing over the open seas invading foreign lands and terrorising the locals. The Vikings were well known for their cruelty and brutality but equally for their strong sense of honour and their pride. It is these last characteristics above all that are depicted in this work.After a short introduction the lofty main theme is heard accompanied by sombre drum sounds. A brief idyllic passage follows that evokes a beautiful landscape. Gradually a heroic melody is revealed leading to a great tutti in which the rousing main theme is heard once more. Return of the Vikings closes with the sound of heroic brass and festivechords.

This magnificent choral from Bert Appermont begins very slow. The different groups of instruments play the same theme and lead to a big climax. After that the instrumentation gets smaller to end in a silent way.

for Trombone Quartet-The title refers to the warm and beautiful sound of the trombone which Bert Appermont tried to use to its full potential when he composed this piece. This golden glow will come alive in the bright fanfares of the first and third movements. In thebrassy effects and heroic melodies of the second movement and in the beautiful expressive choral in the third movement. The composition ends the same way as it began with the main motif echoing away - but now combined with the chorale themefading into the golden glow of the final chord.

A Suite of Five Dances (early 16th Century)-For this collection of instrumental dances the composer musician and publisher Tielman Susato (ca. 1510-1570) focused on well-known folk melodies of his time. In 1551 the album was published by his own Antwerp company bearing the title ‘Het derde musyck boexken’. Manu Mellaerts has already made numerous transcriptions of renaissance works for concert band and this time he sought to create a suite of five dances based on Susato’s collection. A good challenge for those who would like to try something different!
