Since the Treaty of Lisbon came into force at the end of 2009 a lot has happened within the European Union. There were (and are) sceptics as well as ardent supporters. In the meantime however something like a ‘European identity’ has arisen radiating optimism and vitality. Europe’s Glory gives voice to the positive message of solidarity and joined forces.

This piece was written for two sons of the composer as a welcome to young and innocent lives in to this big world. The concept and instrumentation of the composition allows any young band to play this piece. The optional celesta (keyboard) is a refreshing addition evoking the sound of an ancient music box and has a meaningful part as the music box fades out at the end of the piece.

Terra Fecunda was commissioned by the Provincial Government of Limburg Belgium with the aim of fostering an increased awareness within youth orchestras of Limburg their home - an awareness equally of the Belgian and the Dutch part. The title of this work means ‘Fruitful Earth’ and refers to the fruit industry the creative people and also the rich and varied social life in the province. A piece of music that will bring musicians and audience alike great joy!

The Legend of Ratu Kidul carries us into the world of Indonesian mythology on the island of Java:Once upon a time the Queen of the Southern Seas was a kind and beautiful princess. She was the daughter of Prabu Munding Wangi the favourite ofthe entire court and the local people. Her royal father doted on his daughter. Her name was Dewi Kadita but many called her Dewi Srengenge or the Angry Princess.Prabu Munding Wangi longed for an heir but Dewi Kadita’s mother couldn’t fulfil thiswish. So he took a second wife called Poetri Moentiara who was very jealous of the lovely princess and her mother. She begged the king to banish both her rivals from court. However Prabu Munding Wangi didn’t do as she asked. He loved his first wifeand her daughter. The second wife bore him a healthy heir but the monarch remained firm. So Poetri Moentiara called upon the renowned witch Djahil. She promised her a princely reward if Dewi Kandita and her mother were banished. Djahil thought fora moment and incanted this rapal (spell): “May leprosy befall you both”. Soon both mother and daughter began to suffer this dreadful disease. According to the law of the land they were to be banished to the wild forest high on the mountain. With aheavy heart King Munding Wangi saw the law carried out. So the two set off on their way to the forest covered in terrible sores. A great sadness fell across the land except for Poetri Moentiara the second wife of the king who had achieved heraim. The princess fell on hard times. In the forest lived a hermit who took pity on the mother and daughter. The queen couldn’t bear the shame and within a few days had died. Now Dewi Kandita was all alone in the world. There was still the hermit however who fortunately provided food and shelter in a cave temple. He bound her weeping sores but couldn’t relieve her emotional pain. Dewi Kandita became increasingly bitter and eventually left the hermit. She travelled southward from village tovillage further and further until eventually she reached the shores of the Southern Sea. She climbed upon a high cliff and gazed out onto the sea that spread before her. She was tempted to dive into the deep green and blue. In the cool waters shewould be able to forget all her pain and suffering. Suddenly awaking from these thoughts she jumped into the deep. The gods who had looked on Dewi Kandita throughout her hardships were filled with deep compassion. So they transformed her into apowerful spirit of the netherworld Ratu Kidul and to this day she resides in her grand palace under the sea.

An aria is a lyrical dramatic solo work for voice. For this work an instrumental soloist interprets the vocal part. The typical melancholy nostalgia and drama of the Italian aria combines with filmtrack like passages (Morricone) to form the main ingredients of this simple composition. The solo part can be played by a euphonium a trombone or a tenor saxophone (or flugelhorn).

What if famous Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach was born in the 20th Century or beyond? You might probably never hear J. S. Bach the same way again. Bach to the Beat! is an upbeat arrangement comprised of a selection of eight well-known tunes by J. S. Bach all carefully constructed and put together in just over three and a half minutes - with apologies to Bach. This “Ba-rock”-styled work will definitely be a great addition to any band concert program!

The Allschwil music school in Switzerland commissioned this composition to appeal to young people and awaken in them an enthusiasm for music. Sven Van Calster who is known for his graceful melodies and for his colourful - and also varied - instrumentation has fulfilled this commission with bravura. Truly a musical experience!

This beautiful chorale illustrates the winter solstice the longest night of the year. Describing the end of nature’s cycle it has a rather melancholic character until the final chord which symbolises the new beginning. This contemplative work isideal for creating a moment of tranquillity during a concert and is also suitable as a warm-up piece.

Concert suite from the musical Im Schatten von Napoleon-This suite is based on the musical In the Shadow of Napoleon which celebrated its exceptionally successful première in Worms Germany on 21 July 2014. The musical tells the story of Louis-Joseph Marchand Napoleon’s footman who is involved in the dispute over the emperor’s inheritance and the unsolved mystery of his death. The composer strove to present the six musical songs in the suite in such a way that it appears to be an entirely new work.

Chorale Fantasy on How lovely shines the Morning Star-This composition is based on the beautiful chorale melody Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (How beautifully the morning star shines). Like the chorale fantasias by Bach and Buxtehude this is a fantasia in which the original theme is used and altered throughout the work in various ways. Slow passages are alternated with fast ones and finally a grand tutti arrives in which the original chorale theme sounds joyfully in a majestic finale. For extra colour and dimension an optional organ part has been added that can be used when the circumstances are appropriate. On the full score the various organ entries are indicated.
