This beautiful piece of music comes from the movie Artificial Intelligence the masterpiece of the legendary duo director Steven Spielberg and composer John Williams.

This jewel by Bald Wyntin comprises wonderful melodies in all groups and provides excellent opportunities for playing great music. „Alake” is suitable for warming up before competitions or for a pause in your concert programme. The composer chose a very broad instrumentation and this means it can be played by practically all orchestras.

This Hollywood blockbuster from 1962 is an historic and epic drama that turned out to be a massive box-office hit despite the unknown cast. Its success can undoubtedly be attributed in part to the excellent soundtrack. Erik Mast has made a wonderful arrangement of the soundtrack which has become a masterpiece in its own right.

This film was released at the end of the nineties and was a massive success in part thanks to the impressive cast. The performances of John Malkovitch Jeremy Irons Leonardo DiCaprio and Gerard Depardieu who played the main roles in the film were top-notch. In the meantime our own arranger Willy Fransen has become a real specialist in adapting motion picture soundtracks and musicals. This is an example of an excellent arrangement which he based on the film�s outstanding music.

Just like the title suggests Prayer is a wonderful contemplative chorale by the Belgian composer Bert Appermont. This work is great for warming up at competitions and also ideal for a pause in your concert program. You have the opportunityto develop the sound intonation and musicality.

In this composition which consists of three parts the world and life of children is the composer�s leitmotiv. Part 1 suggests the untamed creativity of the child in a virtuoso and dynamic allegro. Part 2 is a quiet protest against the indifference and the injustice that many children still experience. A whirling Celtic dance ends in a grand finale that praises the beauty of all things in part 3. This is an ideal work for a concert or a competition. Dedicated to all children. All vocal parts can be left out since they are doubled in the rest of the band.(ad libitum)

Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo Suppe Demelli better known as Franz von Suppé (1819-1895) was the son of a Belgian father and an Austrian mother. In total he wrote some 30 operettas and Steven Verhaert selected Die schöne Galathea for his arrangement. This splendid overture is a real gem for lovers of the operetta style which is sometimes (unfairly) looked down upon.

Jericho is the musical translation of the well-known story from the book of Joshua about the capture of the city of Jericho by the Israelites.Part 1 depicts the cruel journey through the desert to Canaan the promised land. An emotional lamentation for the yearning for a home for the end of a roaming existence.The capture of Jericho is the theme of part 2. The city cannot be captured immediately and Jehovah orders an impressive army to march around the city for six days. On the seventh day they marched around the city seven times and the priests blew their trumpets and the people cried so loud that the walls of Jericho came tumbling down. The Jews stormed the city and drove theinhabitants away. The music clearly reveals the marching army and you can hear the walls falling down with a tremendous noise. However there is quite some artistic freedom in the actual story.A majestic and grand melody subsequently evokes the triumphant emotions that emerged as the fortified city fell (part 3).Following a personal and romantic interpretation the scene ultimately ends in a typical Jewish feast (part 4) whereby the virtuosity of melodies played by the woodwinds and the passionate rhythms refer to traditional Jewish music. All themes are repeated in this last part in various forms often simultaneous and in duelling counterpoint. The piece ends with fragments from the main theme of part 1 in major: peace and quiet return at last.

This Irish traditional song is widely known even though this tune consists of only a few bars that are repeated all the time. Bart Picqueur turned it into a lively arrangement and incorporated the theme in different ways with a stirring crescendo towards the end.The perfect encore piece or taster piece for any concert!

From his experience as a conductor and adjudicator Bert Appermont knows that bands often experience the same problems: lack of sound control intonation difficulties uncontrolled articulation and insufficient phrasing. Practising these aspects is very demanding and there is little material available that is also enjoyable to play. Four Original Warm-Ups consists of four fun warm-up pieces. Each piece focuses on one of the problems without the music being dull. The four pieces work equally well when played together or as individual items either at rehearsals or in a concert.

This new work is based on Irish folk music.In the first part the main theme is presented as a ballad starting with the piccolo (as replacement for the flute which is widely used in Ireland) moving on the wood section to end with the entire orchestra.It then changes to a kind of rock style theme: powerful rhythmic accompaniment with effects in dampers a pedal point and the use of the spoons which is typical of Irish music (Irish pub) high-range bongo drum (replacement for the Bodhran) etc.In this second part I introduced a second theme as a counterbalance played by several groups which has clearly a more legato character and therefore sounds more melodious.The climaxof the work starts in the low-range brass section with its marcato theme that is developed with a great deal of rhythmicity in the accompaniment clusters etc. into a percussion solo interspersed by the orchestra in five-eight time with frequent parallel movement in chords (folk music style).Towards the end theme 2 recurs twice: first as heard earlier with an extra counter melody and accompaniment pattern then in a canonical form in which the theme is played by three groups. The conclusion is a repeat of the middle section in five-eight time.I have tried to use many of the colours of a wind orchestra by having the wood sections and brass section play alone and making extensive use of dampers. Percussion also has a prominent role throughout the work.

This fine three-part work by Bald Wyntin is intended for young dynamic orchestras and is ideal for working on colour musicality and harmony. Each of the parts focuses on one particular aspect and the work has been orchestrated in such a way that it can be played by most orchestras. It is a varied and colourful work.

In addition to its beautiful music a special feature of this musical is that singers and actors move across the stage on roller skates.Peter Schüller has produced an excellent arrangement of the love song �Only You� from this musical which is still being performed all over the world.

Practising these aspects is very demanding of an orchestra and there is little material available that is also enjoyable to play.�Four Original Warm-Ups� is therefore intended to improve this situation. It consists of four enjoyable warm-up pieces. Each piece focuses on one of the said issues without the music being dull as a result of this.Part 3: Articulation TrainAll aspects of articulation are addressed in this hellish train journey. The gradualacceleration not only suggests a train that is driving faster and faster but is also intended to practise staccato playing. For a concert performance a child or a musician could be dressed up as an engine driver and sound the train departure whistle. A real train whistle can enhance the atmosphere in certain places that have been marked for this purpose. This part can also be used as an encore piece for a concert.These four pieces can but do not have to be played in succession. Each part can be used separately for a rehearsal or concert. I truly hope that these four parts will contribute to improving the standards of many orchestras without spoiling the fun of playing!

Man in Motion is the title number from the film St. Elmo’s Fire from 1985. The song was a huge hit and was even nominated for a Grammy. In the meantime it’s become a world-wide classic which in this entertaining concert band arrangement will enliven any concert programme.

In Pavane the base line which runs throughout the entire piece forms the leitmotiv. This special work unfurls slowly and is based on chords that are reminiscent of Bach or Scarlatti. Towards the middle it builds up a climax that disappears in exactly the same manner as it began.
