Noah's Ark is a composition based on the well-known bible-storys in which Noah builds an ark to conquer the flood. This work portrays four impressions each of them introduced by a theme. To add dramatic power a synthesizer or a wind-machine can be used. The story can also be read by a narrator during the performance.

The Last Song is a beautiful and sad choral that begins very slowly and calmly. Gradually the instrumentation increases leading to a big climax. After this Grandioso ma con moto the instrumentation gets smaller and the piece comes to an end with the initial theme but this time even slower than in the opening.

The Via Aurelia is a Roman road that runs from Rome to Pisa. The construction of this long route started in the third century BC and was used to reach the town of Cosa (now Ansedonia) which the Romans had founded. From here they could govern the Etruscan regions they had recently conquered. Numerous old castles and historical monuments are to be found along this road. One of them is the Porta S. Pancrazio or Porta Aurelia in Rome. It was intended both as the starting point of the Via Aurelia and to protect the city and its inhabitants from sea-based attacks. The work entitled Via Aurelia describes the places of interest along this road and the many battles and wars thatwere fought there.

‘Biberussa’ the old name of the small town of Beverst in Belgium is a combination of the words ‘biber’ and ‘ussa’ meaning beaver and river. This concert march was composed for the 100th anniversary of the Koninklijke Harmonie (Royal Concert Band) ‘Ons Verlangen’ from Beverst a place where the composer had his first musical training. After the opening passage a proud heroic theme is heard. As a contrast it is followed by a simple chorale melody and both themes then appear simultaneously in a grand tutti passage. This is followed by a cantabile trio with a majestic reprise of the main theme bringing the work to a close.

A well-balanced concert programme should contain a good march. When played well a march is a pleasure to listen to and lends itself well to most occasions. The low degree of difficulty and broad instrumentation makes this march accessible to most ensembles and is an excellent choice as a walking march.

Club Paradiso is a work by Sven Van Calster written in his well-known approachable style. He composed this work in the hotel of the same name during a holiday in Alanya Turkey. He paid special attention to an even distribution of the most enjoyable passages amongst all the parts of the orchestra and also took care of the necessary duplications so that most orchestras are able to play the piece.

A good concert needs a solid and resounding opener and “ Lift Off ” is a perfect choice!

Galliarde by Pierre Attaignant (1494-1552) is an elegant opening item for those looking for something a little different. It can also be used as a filler or to link two works in a programme. Manu Mellaerts is an authority on the repertoire of this period and has arranged this short stylish piece while keeping the original renaissance spirit in mind.
