March-Hermann Pallhuber’s traditional march was commissioned by the Austrian Television and was used as festive incidental music at a convention for conductors and concert bands in Innsbruck Austria. That is why it is subtitled “Wildschönauer Festmarsch” (Wildschönau festival march). A Village Festival will make an ideal opening piece but will work equally well to bring a concertto a lively close.

The renowned book Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott (1791) formed the starting point when writing this heroic composition. In fact it`s the emotional tension and atmosphere of the book (instead of the original story line) that is represented musically in 3 parts.Part 1 refers to the sense of honour and the pride of the knight who fights for his ideals. After a bombastic opening a noble hymn follows that turns into a dansant theme in 6/8 time.In the middle part the difficulty of choosing between love and loyalty is expressed (Ivanhoe loves Rebecca but must marry Princess Rowena) in a compelling and increasingly modulating theme (agitation) that builds up to a climax. Then theturmoil of battle erupts (part 3) which conveys the personal vendetta between Ivanhoe and Templar Brian. The piece ends in a magnificent finale where the bombastic opening and noble hymn from the beginning are resumed.

You take your place in an aeroplane and wait expectantly for the motors to spark into life and for the plane to taxi onto the runway. Then it’s full throttle and with a roar of the engines you leave everything behind you. Below the world is in miniature you thrill at the freedom of flying high and take in the spectacular drama of the clouds. It’s moments such as these that Daniel Weinberger has captured in music in Take Off .

Christmas is the time of the year where everyone comes together and peace family and friendship bonds are strengthened. When selecting repertoire for your Christmas concert it’s difficult to find new arrangements that are both challenging and funto work on as well as fun for the audience. Crazy for Christmas is one of those pieces by the Belgian composer Bert Appermont. He uses canons and even fugues throughout this arrangement and foresees a spectacular ending. It is based on Ilest né le divin Enfant and Away in a Manger but refers wittily to Jingle Bells Deck the Halls The Twelve Days of Christmas and Hark the Herald AngelsSing . So ‘crazy’ all the way! Concerto for Horn and Band was written on commission from the horn player Miguel Martinez Megias and the symphonic concert band La Armónica from Buñol Spain. This four-movement work written to fully explore the capabilities of the hornas a solo voice is comprised of a dramatic Sarabande a highly virtuoso Toccata a wonderful Romance and a Finale that reworks the second movement in a kind of fugue and brings the work to a spectacular close. The basicbuilding block of this concerto quite fittingly is the fifth: you only have to think of the post horn or a hunting theme which conjures up the sound of the perfect fifth. Wonderful new repertoire for a wonderful instrument.

This symphony is the most important work of Spanish composer Teo Aparicio-Barberán. The 2002 International Contest for Bands Ciudad de Valencia one of the most prestigious competitions in Europe marked its first public performance. Throughout the work which consists of three movements the composer uses a modern musical vocabulary and combines strong melodic instrumentation with impressive rhythmic passages. Asgard is based on a Scandinavian romantic narrative in the light of the ancient Germanic Sagas.…where the flowery landscape remains in that sweet-scented season where spring is always on the brink of summer. Its fields resemble smooth green lawns(maintained by the grazing red cattle and woolly sheep) and its forests are home to deer and songbirds. The area is protected by an unsurmountable stone wall and is impossible to enter except by the grace of Odin. It is here at High Nest in Val-hall that Odin sits on his throne and surveys all those in his dominion.

This grand work contains four contrasting movements. The first movement Prelude takes the form of an overture: it raises the curtains and marks the beginning of the piece. The brilliant motifs of the opening are contrasted by a calmer and more lyrical central section after which the triumphant opening returns for the movement’s end. The second movement Meditation explores the intimate sounds of the oboe as well as those of the flute and French horn backed by a rich orchestral accompaniment. The third movement presents a more upbeat Procession but not a Procession of the Nobles as written by Rimsky-Korsakov. Quite the opposite Procession resembles a “second line”procession from New Orleans whose up-beat rhythms invite everyone to dance in the streets rather than the measured pacing of a march. Divertimento ends with a Hoedown the tradition American folk dance idiom when the band has the opportunity for both vivacity and virtuosity and may play as fast as it can. It is important to play all four movements with precision clarity and most importantly enthusiasm.

Dance from The Danserye Suite-Tylman Susato (approximately 1500-1561) was an accomplished Flemish composer musician and music publisher. He composed numerous works and published several collections among them Danserye (1551) the third volume of his Musyckboexken which contained his own four-voice airs and dances. Several of these were inspired by traditional Flemish airs. Renaissance scholar Manu Mellaerts has created a graceful arrangement of the most famous pieces from La Mourisque.

One very tiny “pop“ in space resulted in one very big bang that created a vast amount of energy from which life eventually sprang. The Big Bang also starts with that a big bang! The music then begins its journey through timbre and tone colours starts developing melodies complementing rhythms and interesting chords that all represent the creation of something new. Strong dissonances hint at the turmoil that existed while moments of beauty signify balance arriving at various parts of the universe. These contrasting events create a very engaging and exciting musical montage of The Big Bang and what happened next.

The Celtic poem The Voyage of Bran was the inspiration for this fantasy work by Bert Appermont. The subject of this composition is Febal who - together with his companions - travels to the ‘otherworld’ also known as the Island of the Blessed where he finds nothing but sun and prosperity. The sections called Isle of Joy Land of the Women and The Feast intermingle with Song of the Otherworld which acts as a sort of leitmotif.
