In the Machine represents a musical journey inside a machine. Each time the piece is performed this journey is different according to the performer's choices. Set in 3/4 time the work begins using only percussion and vocal techniques. Instruments are added and material changed throughout to create several musical layers and textures. Midway through the piece the machine shifts into high gear. The machine runs smoothly until a musical “ratchet” is thrown in and the machine falls apart.Symphonic Band (full score). Menoche Ch

Kyrie in the original version was part of Fjellheim’s album called Biejjien vuelie - Solkvad. “Biejjien vuelie” menas “Yoik of the sun” in South Sámi language. 'Solkvad' (or 'Sólarjólb' in the original Norse language) is a poem included in the old Norse poem collection Den eldre Edda. The music on the album was inspired by both the Norse poems and the Sámi yoik tradition. The Sámi culture is mentioned on several places in the old Sagas and indicates that the society in the Nordic countries around year 1000 was indeed multi-cultural. The poems selected from the Norse literature had a certain sacred atmosphere; that is why they were combined with elements from theLatin Mass for the album. One fine example for this combination is Kyrie. The words “Kyrie eleison” are used both in Latin and South Sámi language with the Sámi version having another rhythm and differently stressed syllables.

“Appalachian Spring” was composed in 1943-44 as a ballet for Miss Martha Graham on a commission from the Elisabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation. It was first performed by Miss Graham and her company at the Coolidge Festival in the Libarary of Congress Washington D.C. on October 30 1994.The original scoring called for a chamber ensemble of thirteen instruments. The present arrangement for symphony orchestra was made by the composer in the spring of 1945. It is a condensed version of the ballet retaining all essential features but omitting those sections in which the interest is primarily choreographic. In 1945 “Appalachian Spring” received the Pulitzer Prize for music as well asthe award of the Music Critics Circle of New York for the outstanding theatrical work of the season. Written on commission from dancer/choreographer Martha Graham the music of Appalachian Spring is at once characteristic of Copland's 'Americana' style of the late 1930s and the 1940s. It was first performed in May of 1945. This is the study score of the full orchestra version.

A good example of MacMillan's highly resourceful writing for young voices this energetic and enterprising work gives the Latin 'Te Deum' words to a choir of beginner singers and the Lakota chant to a three-part choir of treble/soprano voices. Flute and bells support the choirs without merely doubling and the piano part colourfully echoes the vocal lines. MacMillan's often-used vocal ornamentation is much in evidence here and the piece is challenging but not difficult. It is an ideal vehicle for young singers who will enjoy working through the rhythmic groupings and getting to grips with singing quick scales and tuning triadic passages. Thebeginners (who are also given simpler forms of the ornament) will also find the involvement with their more experienced counterparts exciting and motivating. Helpful notes by Doreen Rao in the front of the score give hints about how to approach teaching this music to young singers in an imaginative and enjoyable way. For treble voices in three parts treble voices in unison flute tubular bells and piano. Latin and English.
