This work was commissioned by the Schubert Ensemble and first performed by them on 5th July 1992 as part of the Cheltenham International Festival. The words 'I broke off a golden branch' come from a Croatian folksong which isvery obliquely referred to in the second of the work's two movements. An adaptation of Under The Greenwood Tree by Thomas Hardy. The musical follows the story fairly closely so directors can feel free to augment dialogue from the original novel if they wish. Eighteen musical numbers with sometraditional folk dancing and opportunity for a folk band.

Op. 33 for Brass Quintet. Commissioned by the Three Choirs Festival 1992 and premiered by the London Gabrieli Brass Consort. This is a short piece for brass quintet in one movement. The polyphony of the introduction gives wayto massed chords which in turn lead to the first main section. This is a funeral march during which all the instruments have solos in turn. The trombone is first then trumpet I; horn; later in duet with trumpet II; finallythere is long solo for the tuba. The second section is a series of fanfares on trumpets joined by the horn which alternate with successive phrases of a chorale melody on the lower instruments - horn trombone and tuba. MitFried and Freud ich far dahin is Martin Luther’s masterly and very beautiful re-creation in German of the Nunc dimittus. The massed chords of the introduction then return and the piece ends with the polyphony with which itbegan. Parts available: SOS04782

This version of Partita was orchestrated by the composer in 1988 for Anne-Sophie Mutter. The first performance was given in January 1990 by Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by the composer. Duration c.16minutes. Davies's feeling for the potency and bravura of the clarinet goes back to works of the 1960s; his concerto for the instrument is predictably a big ranging piece in two linked movements. The first fast with a brief slowintroduction has the soloist in propulsive melodic flights slipping over into florid runs but it is a virtuoso piece for the orchestra especially for the marimba and pair of horns. The Adagio that follows is in the spare cold birdcall-riven style of other recent Davies slow movements exploiting first the clarinet's low register and then at its climax the instrument's high extremes. A cadenza leads to the coda where Davies introduces a Scots tune previously hinted at with which he brings the work to an end in F sharp major. Miniature score.

Internationally renowned Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski created this impressive and deceptively folk-like Orchestral work when he was a very young composer and it propelled him into the first ranks of young composers in theearly part of the 20th century.In recent years Lutoslawki’s music has begun to enjoy a reassessment after a few years of recession following his death in 1994. The piece begins with suggestions of folkloric influences butrapidly undergoes a transformation into something deeper more meaningful and ultimately more rewarding. The Symphonic Variations is a rare survivor of Lutoslawski’s early work as Poland suffered Nazi occupation followed bydecades of Soviet dominance and the composer had to contend with survival – for a time by playing Piano with composer Andrzej Panufnik in the bars and café’s of Warsaw. He fled Warsaw in 1944 with very few scores of which thisis one.Even the graphic arrangement of the score underlines its modernity with blank white spaces during passages of rest and large superscript time signatures of particular value to the conductor during passages where the timechanges in each bar.
