Nymphea Reflection is a work by renowned composer Kaija Saariaho arranged for String Orchestra. Commissioned by the Schleswig Holstein Festival it was first performed on the 16th of August 2001 inElmshorn Germany by Sinfonietta Cracovia conducted by John Axelrod. Saariaho states that the starting point for Nymphea Reflection came from the idea of arranging her stringquartet Nymphea. Originally working on a straight arrangement she eventually realised that this would be very difficult and she'd need to find a new way of composing that particular piece of music. She designed a formal conceptfor each of the six sections imbuing them with very different characters. Her simulation of electronic processing by means of orchestration is an innovative take on a new form while the effect ofthe poem by Arseniy Tarkovsky whispered by the musicians gives a haunting new perspective to both music and words.

There are seven songs and an instrumental interlude making all together an entertainment that provides opportunity for very simple stage action and dancing: nothing at all elaborate is needed in the way of scenery and costumes. The voices are in unison throughout and their part is always doubled by instruments which should make it relatively easy for quite young children to learn their way into Davies's delightful tunes. The references to Hoy areincidental and could possibly be adapted to suit the locality of a particular performance. In any event most of these tall stories and rhymes will appeal to children everywhere. Full score for this set of songs for children'svoices recorders piano guitars and percussion. Sets of parts also available.

The world première of A New Commandment a piece by the late Sir John Tavener specially commissioned for Summer Fields was in February 2014 at the Sheldonian Theatre Oxford. This work was possibly one of his very last commissions before his sudden and untimely death in November 2013. COMPOSER’S NOTE I have set these words from St John’s Gospel many times because I feel them to be among the most profound and therefore key texts in the Christian faith. This setting falls into three sections with an ABA structure. A New Commandment is dedicated to my mother-in-law Mary but it is also an unspoken tribute to the Spanish master Victoria who has inspired methroughout my life. The poem I Sing of a Maiden is one of the best known of the anonymous medieval hymns deceptive in its simplicity and full of grace and faith. The setting by Lennox Berkeley also has a deceptive simplicity but reveals on repeated listenings or performances a harmonic integrity and subtlely that has made it a work that will continue to be performed and enjoyed for a long time to come.Lennox Berkeley was a fascinating character the first (illegitimate) son of an earl who went on to have two more sons with Lennox’s mother the woman who became his father’s wife. He was composing and having his works performed before he finished school then upon meeting Ravel wasintroduced to legendary teacher Nadia Boulanger in Paris with whom he studied. He mixed with the great artistic and musical names of prewar Paris before returning to Britain where he later met and lived with Benjamin Britten before the arrival of Peter Pears in Britten’s life. Berkeley was professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music and himself composed more than two hundred works of music many of them of enduring value.
